Position Summary

The Senior Manager of Product Management, CoreAI leads product strategy and execution for the artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) platform that supports athenahealth’s healthcare technology products. This role owns product management for ai platform roadmap development and prioritization, large language model (LLM) and machine learning operations, and collaboration across engineering, finance, product, infrastructure, and internal developer teams. Based in Boston, MA, this position works with teams building shared AI capabilities that enable reliable and safe, scalable, and cost-conscious AI product development across athenahealth. This role reports to the Executive Director, Product Management, athena Developer Platform.

About the Team

athenahealth’s AI platform team builds and supports the shared technology that enables product and engineering teams to develop, evaluate, and operate AI-enabled healthcare products at scale, including capabilities that support athenahealth’s electronic health record (EHR) products. The team partners with product management, engineering, data science, machine learning engineering, cloud infrastructure, finance, technology vendors, and internal development teams. Its work spans AI platform capabilities, developer infrastructure, model evaluation, capacity planning, and operational readiness. A distinctive part of this team’s work is helping athenahealth product teams build AI capabilities on shared foundations while balancing model quality, infrastructure capacity, reliability, cost, and developer needs.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Lead product management for MLOps and shared AI platform capabilities, including product strategy, roadmap development, capacity planning, prioritization, and stakeholder alignment.

  • Partner with engineering, finance and cloud cost management teams, technology vendors, and internal product teams to forecast, secure, and manage LLM, ML, and cloud infrastructure capacity required for AI product development.

  • Represent the needs of internal developers and product teams using shared AI and developer platform capabilities, identifying barriers and translating customer needs into clear product priorities.

  • Prioritize competing requests for AI platform, MLOps, and shared engineering capacity using customer impact, technical constraints, cost, risk, and business objectives.

  • Align AI platform roadmaps with athenahealth’s broader AI strategy, product priorities, platform architecture, and delivery requirements.

  • Guide teams in strengthening model evaluation, LLM lifecycle management, AI quality practices, observability, and operational readiness for production AI capabilities.

  • Apply AI tools and techniques to product management workflows, evaluate where AI can improve platform planning, analysis, and decision-making, and help teams adopt appropriate AI-enabled practices while applying sound human judgment.

  • Use product metrics, platform telemetry, capacity and cost data, and stakeholder feedback to identify friction, improve prioritization, and measure the performance and effectiveness of shared platform capabilities.

  • Communicate technical tradeoffs, platform constraints, operational risks, roadmap decisions, and measurable outcomes clearly to product, engineering, finance, and executive stakeholders.

  • Coordinate early-access programs and feedback with internal teams adopting new AI platform and developer capabilities, using findings to inform product improvements and broader adoption.

Additional Job Responsibilities

  • Support product and engineering teams as they develop AI agents and other AI-enabled capabilities using shared athenahealth infrastructure.

  • Develop operating processes that improve roadmap visibility, dependency management, capacity forecasting, and delivery predictability across shared platform initiatives.

  • Collaborate with third-party technology providers to evaluate capabilities, address dependencies, and support platform requirements.

  • Contribute to product documentation, roadmap communications, release planning, and stakeholder updates for AI and developer platform capabilities.

  • Identify opportunities to improve the software development lifecycle (SDLC), developer experience, and adoption of shared platform services.

  • Facilitate cross-functional decisions when technical dependencies, resource constraints, or differing priorities affect delivery.

Expected Education & Experience

  • 7+ years of experience in product management, technical product management, platform product management, MLOps, developer platforms, or a related technical product leadership field.

  • Experience working with technical teams, such as software engineering, data science, machine learning engineering, cloud infrastructure, or platform engineering teams.

  • Experience leading complex cross-functional initiatives involving multiple stakeholders, dependencies, resource constraints, and competing priorities.

  • Knowledge of AI and machine learning product development, with familiarity in areas such as MLOps, large language models (LLMs), model evaluation, capacity planning, cloud infrastructure, AI observability, or platform operations.

  • Experience developing product strategy and roadmaps and using metrics, customer feedback, and technical considerations to make prioritization decisions.

  • Ability to communicate technical concepts and tradeoffs clearly to technical and non-technical audiences, including senior leaders.

  • Ability to collaborate across organizational boundaries and reach decisions among stakeholders with differing priorities without relying on direct reporting relationships.

  • Experience with platform metrics, roadmap governance, delivery reporting, software development lifecycle (SDLC) practices, or operational planning is preferred.

  • Experience with cloud cost management or financial operations (FinOps) practices is preferred.

  • Bachelor’s degree in product management, software engineering, computer science, information systems, data science, a related field, or equivalent practical experience is preferred


Expected Compensation

$141,000 - $239,000

The base salary range shown reflects the full range for this role from minimum to maximum. At athenahealth, base pay depends on multiple factors, including job-related experience, relevant knowledge and skills, how your qualifications compare to others in similar roles, and geographical market rates.  Base pay is only one part of our competitive Total Rewards package - depending on role eligibility, we offer both short and long-term incentives by way of an annual discretionary bonus plan, variable compensation plan, and equity plans.
