At athenahealth, our vision is to create a thriving ecosystem that delivers accessible, high-quality, and sustainable healthcare for all. The Data & Ecosystem Platform team creates the connections, intelligence, and experiences that unify the healthcare ecosystem. We believe Data is an Advantage—and we are investing in the systems that empower our customers to compete and thrive. Position Summary:

We are seeking a Senior Manager of Experience Design & Innovation to lead the design of data and analytics experiences that bring this vision to life. In close partnership with product and technical leaders, this person will co-develop and champion a clear, user-centered vision for our analytics portfolio—helping shape strategy, inspire teams, and ensure the experience is cohesive and impactful. They will guide how users interact with the intelligence embedded in athena’s platform, shaping how data is accessed, understood, and acted upon. The ideal candidate is grounded in human-centered design and is a systems thinker, skilled in data visualization and information architecture, with the influence and vision to align teams across a complex ecosystem.

Role Location:

Boston, MA – This position requires a hybrid approach and to report to office 1 day per week.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Craft Cohesive Data Experiences
Simplify complexity by designing seamless, user-centered experiences across reporting, analytics, and insights tools. Develop products that tell compelling stories with data—enabling users to take action, improve performance, and make more informed business and care decisions. Maintain consistency in architecture, data modeling, and UI to create a unified experience across channels.

  • Shape Data Strategy Through Design
Partner with product and data strategy leaders to determine which problems matter most and how AI can help unlock new opportunities and value.

  • Champion the User Perspective
Work continuously with our diverse customer base—spanning various practice sizes, specialties, data literacy levels, and attitudes—to understand their analytic needs. Translate insights into high-impact, actionable design opportunities.

  • Drive Platform-Wide Alignment
Align internal teams on shared standards for how data is visualized, modeled, and surfaced. Ensure design patterns and systems scale effectively across products and teams. Visually communicate the connected ecosystem of analytics tools to align teams around a shared vision and drive strategic clarity.

  • Lead with Influence
Thrive in a matrixed environment by navigating competing priorities with diplomacy, strategic clarity, and a collaborative spirit.

  • Reimagine Data Interactions with AI
Champion the use of AI to redefine how users engage with data—introducing new paradigms for forecasting, exploration, and automation. Act as a change agent who explores boldly and inspires others to innovate.

Education, Experience, & Skills Required:

  • 8+ years in UX, service design, or data product roles, with a strong record as a hands-on producer. Experience guiding small teams or mentoring others is a plus but secondary to your individual execution and delivery capabilities.

  • Proven success designing data-heavy tools (e.g., dashboards, decision support systems, BI platforms)

  • A strong point of view on how AI will transform how users explore, interpret, and act on data

  • Deep expertise in information architecture, data modeling, and data visualization best practices

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence stakeholders and align teams

  • Experience with healthcare, clinical and/or revenue cycle data strongly preferred

  • Demonstrated comfort working with and designing for AI-driven experiences

  • Skilled at integrating user insight into product strategy—not just design execution

How You Work:

You’ll thrive at athenahealth if you lead with curiosity and care, adapt easily, and enjoy solving complex problems through collaboration. We value:

  • Curiosity & Growth Mindset – You pursue learning and insight from users, data, and peers

  • Adaptability & Resilience – You adjust to ambiguity and help others do the same

  • Experimental & Iterative – You test, learn, and refine ideas quickly and effectively

  • Radical Collaboration – You co-create solutions across disciplines with trust and humility
