Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior Director of Credit Risk Management to lead the credit risk function for our payments and fintech platform. This role owns the strategy, policies, and infrastructure that manage counterparty, merchant, and transactional credit exposure across our payment products — including merchant acquiring, lending, and embedded finance offerings. The ideal candidate combines deep quantitative credit risk expertise with hands-on leadership of underwriting, portfolio monitoring, and loss mitigation teams, and partners closely with Product, Data Science, Finance, Compliance, and Operations to balance growth with prudent risk management.

Responsibilities
  • Own the end-to-end credit risk strategy for the company's payments and fintech portfolio, including merchant/counterparty underwriting, exposure limits, reserve requirements, and loss forecasting.
  • Design, implement, and continuously refine credit risk policies, scorecards, and underwriting models to balance risk appetite with revenue and conversion goals.
  • Build and lead a high-performing team of credit risk managers and analysts; set goals, coach performance, and develop talent.
  • Monitor portfolio performance (delinquency, chargebacks, default rates, loss ratios) and proactively identify emerging risk trends across merchant segments, verticals, and payment products.
  • Partner with Data Science/Analytics to develop and validate credit scoring models, machine-learning underwriting tools, and early-warning indicators.
  • Set and manage credit risk appetite, exposure limits, and reserve/collateral policies in partnership with Finance and Treasury.
  • Lead loss mitigation, collections strategy, and workout processes for delinquent or high-risk accounts.
  • Present credit risk metrics, portfolio health, and key decisions to executive leadership, Risk Committee, and the Board as needed.
  • Ensure credit risk practices comply with applicable regulatory requirements (e.g., card network rules, BSA/AML-adjacent controls, state lending regulations) in partnership with Legal and Compliance.
  • Own credit risk components of due diligence for new products, partnerships, and market expansion, including BNPL, embedded lending, and merchant cash advance offerings.
  • Drive automation and scalability of credit underwriting and monitoring processes to support rapid business growth.
  • Manage relationships with external data providers, bureaus, and risk technology vendors.
Qualifications
  • 12+ years of progressive experience in credit risk management, with at least 5–7 years in a senior leadership role; payments, fintech, card issuing/acquiring, or commercial lending background strongly preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Statistics, or related field required; MBA or advanced quantitative degree a plus.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • Proven experience building or scaling a credit risk function, including underwriting frameworks, portfolio monitoring, and loss mitigation at a high-growth or transaction-volume business.
  • Strong quantitative background: experience with credit scoring models, statistical/ML-based underwriting, and portfolio risk analytics.
  • Track record of managing exposure and losses across a merchant or borrower portfolio, including chargeback/dispute risk, fraud-adjacent losses, and counterparty default.
  • Deep understanding of payments ecosystem dynamics (card networks, ACH, merchant acquiring, or lending) and related regulatory frameworks.
  • Demonstrated people leadership: hiring, developing, and managing credit risk or underwriting teams.
  • Excellent executive communication skills, with experience presenting to senior leadership, Risk Committees, or Boards.
  • Experience with SQL, Python, R, or similar tools for risk analytics preferred.

  • Health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Retirement savings plan with company match.
