Senior Software Engineer - Media Platform (Java)

Squarespace is looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join the Media Platform team within our Building Blocks Platform Engineering organization. The Media Platform powers how media assets—images, videos, audio, files, and fonts —are uploaded, processed, stored, and delivered across all Squarespace products. This team's mission is to deliver a scalable, performant, reliable, and secure media experience for internal developers and end users alike.

As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will shape the architecture and evolution of this critical infrastructure layer, working with product engineers, infrastructure teams, and product stakeholders. This role is ideal for engineers who are experienced in backend systems, passionate about solving technical challenges at scale, and enthusiastic about enabling rich media experiences across the web.

You will report to the Engineering Manager of Media Platform in our NYC office. This is a hybrid work opportunity with three days in the office.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will:

• Design and implement distributed systems for media ingestion, transformation, storage, and delivery
• Develop backend services and tools using Java, Spring, and cloud-native architectures (e.g., Kubernetes on GCP)
• Ensure system performance, reliability, and availability at scale—handling millions of media assets across customer sites
• Drive architectural decisions around video/audio streaming, image optimization, CDN integration, and edge caching
• Collaborate with internal engineering teams to ensure seamless integrations and developer-friendly APIs
• Stay current with the latest developments in media technologies, open-source tools, and backend infrastructure trends
• Be a technical leader, and mentor within the team

Desired Experience:

• 6+ years of experience developing backend systems with Java and Spring in cloud environments (e.g. GCP)
• Experience with media content processing and delivery, including with CDNs
• Experience developing large-scale distributed systems. Familiarity with the behaviors of different transaction control and consistency models.
• Experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases such as CockroachDB, MongoDB
• DevOps skills, including infrastructure as code (e.g., Terraform), CI/CD pipelines, and system reliability engineering practices

Cash Compensation Range: $153,500 - $247,250 USD

The base salary for this position will vary based on job-related criteria including relevant skills, experience, and location, among other factors. In addition to the cash compensation above (which includes base salary and, where applicable for eligible roles, may include on-target commissions or overtime pay), Squarespace employees are eligible to be granted an option to purchase our common stock.
