Directors serve as trusted advisors to executive stakeholders, oversee large-scale client engagements, develop long-term client relationships, drive business development, and help shape the continued growth of CFGI’s State & Local Tax Services practice.

What you might expect:

  • Advise CFOs, Tax Directors, Controllers, executive leadership, and private equity sponsors on strategic multistate tax planning, restructuring, and indirect tax optimization.
  • Lead multidisciplinary teams delivering SALT planning, tax compliance, tax controversy, audit defense, reverse audits, tax technology, and process improvement engagements.
  • Provide technical leadership on nexus, apportionment, unitary filing methodologies, indirect tax regulations, and evolving multistate tax legislation.
  • Oversee engagement planning, quality assurance, staffing, project economics, risk management, and client satisfaction across multiple concurrent engagements.
  • Develop innovative methodologies, tax technology solutions, automation initiatives, and scalable delivery models that improve engagement quality and efficiency.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to executive leadership while collaborating with legal counsel, finance organizations, external auditors, and tax departments throughout the engagement lifecycle.
  • Recruit, mentor, and develop Senior Managers, Managers, and Consultants while strengthening the firm’s technical capabilities and leadership pipeline.
  • Drive business development through proposal leadership, strategic account management, networking, thought leadership, and identifying cross-selling opportunities throughout CFGI’s client base.

What you must have:

  • 12+ years of experience in state and local tax, corporate tax, public accounting, and/or corporate tax consulting.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience at a Big 4 firm (Deloitte, EY, KPMG, or PwC).
  • Experience leading executive-level SALT engagements involving state income tax, indirect tax, multistate tax planning, restructuring, and tax controversy.

What sets you apart:

  • Experience advising executive leadership on state income tax, indirect tax, sales and use tax, multistate tax planning, restructuring, and tax controversy strategies.
  • Experience applying state and local tax regulations across complex multistate organizations while developing practical, tax-efficient planning strategies.
  • Experience leading technical tax research, preparing executive-level technical memoranda, and supporting complex state tax examinations and controversy matters.
  • Experience developing innovative methodologies, tax technology solutions, automation initiatives, or scalable delivery models for SALT engagements.
  • Experience managing multiple engagement teams while overseeing staffing, engagement economics, quality, risk management, and client delivery.
  • Experience collaborating with executive leadership, finance organizations, legal counsel, external auditors, and tax departments to optimize multistate tax strategies.
  • Experience driving business development through proposal leadership, strategic account management, client expansion, networking, thought leadership, or revenue generation initiatives.
  • Experience recruiting, mentoring, developing, and retaining high-performing tax professionals while contributing to practice growth and leadership development.

Nice to have:

  • CPA license, JD, MST, MBA, or other relevant professional credential.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, Business, or a related field.
  • Experience supporting multinational organizations, private equity portfolio companies, or complex multistate enterprises.
  • Experience with Avalara, Vertex, tax research platforms, tax compliance software, workflow automation technologies, or AI-enabled tax solutions.

Who thrives here:

  • Outstanding interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills with the ability to influence executive stakeholders.
  • Proactive in identifying client needs and developing long-term trusted advisor relationships.
  • Highly organized with the ability to lead multiple large engagements and competing priorities.
  • Strong analytical and structured problem-solving abilities with sound judgment in complex situations.
  • Entrepreneurial, self-motivated, adaptable, ethical, and dependable.
  • High energy with a commitment to exceptional client service, practice growth, and leadership development.
