About Us

Chess.com is one of the largest gaming sites in the world and the #1 platform for playing, learning, and enjoying chess.

We are a team of 600+ fully remote people in 60+ countries working hard to serve the global chess community. We are here to support 200M+ chess players worldwide with the best possible product, content, and tools to serve the community!

We are a tech company. A gaming company. A content company. And we do it all with passion and commitment to the game. Above all we prize our mission-driven, flat, life-celebrating, no-corporate culture, and we look forward to meeting you and learning more about what you can bring to the team.

About the Role

We’re hiring multiple Product Designers to join teams across Chess.com, Chessable and ChessKid

As we get to know you during the interview process, we’ll partner with you to find the team and problem space where you can have the most impact.

About You

You’re a product designer with a strong eye for UI and a solid grasp of user experience. You care about making things clear, usable, and well-crafted.

You’re comfortable working on different types of problems—new features, improvements to existing flows, or evolving patterns that need to scale. You can zoom in to refine details and zoom out to understand how your work fits into the broader product.

You communicate your thinking clearly, collaborate well with cross-functional partners, and take ownership of your work from start to finish.

What You’ll Do
  • Work closely with Product, Engineering, and Design to define problems and ship effective solutions
  • Design polished interfaces for web and mobile that are intuitive and consistent
  • Use and contribute to our design system to support scalable, cohesive experiences
  • Create flows, wireframes, and prototypes to explore and communicate ideas
  • Present your work and explain your decisions using user needs, product context, and data where available
  • Own projects from concept through implementation, ensuring strong design-to-code alignment
  • Iterate based on feedback, product goals, and user insights
  • Identify opportunities to improve the product and follow through on solutions
  • Give and receive thoughtful design feedback
What We’re Looking For
  • 2–4 years of experience as a Product Designer on a consumer-facing product or game
  • A portfolio that shows strong UX thinking and high-quality UI design
  • Solid understanding of typography, layout, hierarchy, and interaction design
  • Experience designing for both web and mobile
  • Experience working with an established design system
  • Familiarity with how design translates into code (HTML/CSS/JS or mobile frameworks)
  • Proficiency with modern design tools (e.g., Figma)
  • Experience using AI-assisted tools (e.g., Figma Make, Cursor, Claude Code) to prototype and iterate
  • Strong communication skills in a remote, distributed team
  • Clear written communication and ability to document decisions
  • Ownership and attention to detail in your work
Bonus Points
  • Interest in chess and familiarity with Chess.com or Chessable
  • Experience designing complex or data-rich products
  • Experience contributing to design systems or pattern libraries
  • Frontend or design engineering experience (web, iOS, or Android)
  • Experience with accessibility and inclusive design practices

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
