Position Overview 

Autodesk is leading the transformation of the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry by integrating AI technology into our products. We're enhancing our applications with cloud-native capabilities, including data at scale, edge computing, AI-based solutions, and advanced 3D modeling and graphics. This innovation is happening across our flagship products—AutoCAD, Revit, and Construction Cloud—and Forma, our new Industry Cloud.

Our team is tasked with establishing an initial vision for how these new technologies can transform our existing products. 

As a Principal User Experience Designer on the AEC Solutions team, you will shape the future of how our customers utilize generative AI in their work. You will be part of a versatile group of AI Researchers, ML Engineers, Product Managers, Software Architects, and Experience Designers who are building cutting-edge foundation models and generative AI tools for the AEC industry. You will be responsible for researching, designing and validating novel AI workflows and features for Autodesk’s software products This is an opportunity to make a significant impact on the direction of Generative AI at Autodesk. 

This role reports to the experience design manager for AEC Platform Experience and Analytics. 

Prefer candidates in Boston, MA or Toronto, Canada to work hybrid/remote.

Responsibilities 

  • Rapidly develop and test novel and visionary experience design concepts internally and with select customers 

  • Communicate customer requirements through storytelling, interactive prototypes, and other iterative artifacts like task diagrams, workflows and wireframes, which serve as part of a complete visual and functional design specification 

  • Visualize and prototype intended solutions at various levels of fidelity, from high-level wireframes or mock-ups to conceptual presentations to highly technical documents and diagrams 

  • Partner with product managers, engineers, AI researchers, and other designers to define great experiences from initial concept through successful implementation 

  • Lead design presentations and discussions with a wide range of audiences 

  • Collaborate directly with our User Researcher to plan and prioritize research projects 

  • Plan and facilitate user testing to iterate and refine experience designs and concepts 

  • Develop and maintain familiarity with Autodesk products and competitors to ensure viability with proposed solutions 

  • Utilize Autodesk’s standard design/interaction patterns and components to drive consistent customer experiences, and contribute new patterns and components where appropriate 

  • Partner with development teams to help drive successful implementation of design/interaction patterns and deliver quality experiences to our customers 

  • Lead and design workshops, incorporating innovative facilitation techniques for maximum impact. 

 

Minimum Qualifications 

  • 8+ years of related professional user experience design and user research experience 

  • Demonstrated experience designing complex B2B/technical platform experiences 

  • Domain knowledge within Architecture, Engineering and/or Construction (or other adjacent industries like Manufacturing, VFX, etc.) 

  • First-hand experience with 3D tools and building geometry workflows like Revit and Forma, etc. 

  • Depth of understanding in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and related experience design patterns (i.e. prompting and dialog experiences, presenting generated outputs, and/or simplifying complex data experiences into conversational patterns, etc.). 

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience 

  • Current portfolio of commercial UX project work 

  • Up-to-date expertise in human-centered design best practices 

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, manage multiple tasks, and set priorities with direction and/or feedback from stakeholders and teammates. 

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to distil complex ideas to their essence. 

  • Comfortable in a highly collaborative, fast-paced environment with multiple stakeholders, can adjust to changing priorities under tight timelines 

 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Experience in large, distributed, enterprise organizations. 

  • Working experience in architecture, engineering, and construction. 

  • History designing cutting edge AI experiences  

  • Experience with data science and/or machine learning engineering.

Salary transparency

Salary is one part of Autodesk’s competitive compensation package. For U.S.-based roles, we expect a starting base salary between $133,300 and $215,600. Offers are based on the candidate’s experience and geographic location, and may exceed this range. In addition to base salaries, we also have a significant emphasis on annual cash bonuses, commissions for sales roles, stock grants, and a comprehensive benefits package.
