Toast is looking for a seasoned Principal Technical Program Manager (TPM) to drive and enhance the efficiency, execution, and cross-functional alignment of large, complex R&D initiatives. As a Principal TPM, you will play a pivotal role in shaping program strategies, establishing best practices, and delivering high-impact projects that align with our product and business technology objectives. This role demands a blend of strategic vision, technical expertise, and hands-on program management, empowering teams to deliver on Toast’s ambitious roadmap.

  • Diving Deep: Quickly understand the scope, requirements, and risks associated with new and existing programs. Be ready to dive deep into technical and operational details, rapidly get up to speed, and identify and mitigate potential risks to ensure smooth program execution; all while being able to keep the big picture in mind.
  • Stakeholder Partnership: Cultivate solid relationships with stakeholders across R&D, Product, and Engineering, including senior management, collaborating on feature planning and resource allocation to ensure strategic alignment and operational efficiency.
  • Adaptable: Able to “the Toast way” and to adapt to change and iterate quickly; comfortable recalibrating plans, processes, and stakeholder expectations in complex and ambiguous environments
  • Technical Leadership and Guidance: Leverage your technical fluency to guide teams, establishing best practices and fostering continuous improvement all in service of reaching the teams’ most critical outcomes. Encourage innovation within program teams by setting technical fluency standards and facilitating professional growth.

What you'll need to thrive (Requirements)

  • 12+ years of experience in technical program management and working with product, feature, and infrastructure teams, with a proven record of managing and delivering complex cross-functional programs in a tech-driven environment.
  • Deep background in the software development lifecycle (SDLC) and strong technical fluency, particularly with infrastructure systems (e.g. cloud technology - especially AWS, networking, etc).
  • Demonstrated ability to build strategic frameworks and standardize processes for high-impact delivery across multiple programs.
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and stakeholder management skills, with a history of effectively collaborating with technical and non-technical partners.
  • Results-oriented with a strategic mindset; proven ability to drive multiple programs to successful completion with a sense of urgency.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, combined with the ability to make data-driven decisions and communicate insights clearly.
  • Adaptable, iterative, and feedback-driven; embraces challenges as learning opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Comfortable using AI and eager to continue learning how to leverage its power and explore its potential.
  • Self-starter who thrives both independently and as a cornerstone of a high-performing team.
  • This role requires someone who is extremely comfortable balancing technical understanding and experience with strong program management skills.

What will help you stand out (Nonessential Skills/Nice to Haves)

  • Insatiably Curious: A perpetual learner, always exploring cutting-edge tech, AI, organizational psychology, and the dynamic food industry.
  • Certified/Tooling Excellence: Committed to best practices, maintaining key program management certifications (PMP, Agile, Jira, etc.).
  • Atlassian Admin: Experience managing and administering Atlassian systems including team and project configurations
  • Third Party Management: Experience with 3rd-party management/engagement and building strong partnerships.
