We are seeking a Principal Database Architect (MongoDB) to lead the design, implementation, and optimization of our MongoDB environments while providing strategic guidance on database architecture, automation, and operational efficiencies. This role will have a primary focus on MongoDB (Atlas), while also supporting relational database systems (SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL) as needed (approximately 25% RDBMS exposure).

The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in MongoDB administration, performance tuning, and high availability strategies, as well as a strong understanding of relational databases in cloud-hosted environments. The Principal NoSQL Database Architect will play a key role in ensuring our database ecosystems are scalable, secure, and optimized to support mission-critical applications.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead MongoDB Strategy & Architecture – Design and maintain high-performance MongoDB (Atlas) environments, ensuring scalability, resilience, and efficiency.
  • Database Administration & Maintenance – Oversee installation, configuration, upgrades, patching, and performance tuning for MongoDB and SQL Server/MySQL
  • Automation & Optimization – Develop automation for database provisioning, schema management, backup/recovery, and performance tuning.
  • High Availability & Disaster Recovery – Implement replication, failover, and data integrity best practices for both NoSQL and RDBMS databases.
  • Performance & Query Optimization – Analyze slow-running MongoDB queries, optimize indexing strategies, and ensure efficient execution plans for both NoSQL and SQL-based databases.
  • Collaboration with Development Teams – Provide best practices for MongoDB schema design while also supporting efficient SQL query structures.
  • Security & Compliance – Ensure MongoDB and SQL Server/MySQL databases meet security, compliance, and audit standards, including access control, encryption, and data retention policies.
  • Monitoring & Incident Response – Implement and maintain monitoring solutions for proactive performance tuning and troubleshooting of MongoDB and SQL Server/MySQL databases.
  • Cloud & Infrastructure Management – Work with AWS cloud services (MongoDB Atlas, RDS, EC2, S3) to optimize cost, performance, and availability.
  • Production Support & On-Call Rotation – Participate in an on-call rotation to support business-critical database issues outside regular hours.
  • Database Governance & Best Practices – Define and enforce standards for MongoDB schema design, indexing strategies, and query tuning, while ensuring best practices for SQL Server/MySQL where applicable.

Requirements:

  • 8+ years of experience in database architecture, administration, and performance tuning, with a strong focus on MongoDB (Atlas).
  • Deep expertise in MongoDB administration, sharding, replication, performance tuning, and security best practices.
  • Hands-on experience with MongoDB Atlas, including automation, monitoring, and backup strategies.
  • Strong understanding of NoSQL data modeling principles and schema design best practices.
  • Familiarity with RDBMS databases (SQL Server or MySQL) and the ability to support them (~25% of responsibilities).
  • Proficiency in scripting and automation (Python, PowerShell, Bash, etc.) to streamline database operations.
  • Experience with cloud-based database solutions (AWS, MongoDB Atlas, RDS, EC2, S3, etc.).
  • Hands-on experience with database monitoring tools (New Relic, Datadog, Prometheus, CloudWatch, etc.).
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with the ability to work under pressure.
  • Experience working in an Agile/Scrum development environment with JIRA for work tracking.

 Bonus Skills:

  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation) for database provisioning.
  • Knowledge of Kafka, Redis, or other distributed data technologies.
  • Certifications in MongoDB, AWS, or SQL Server/MySQL.
