Job Description Summary:

The Pharmacy Supply Chain and Operations Specialist is responsible for managing pharmaceutical supply chain operations at Boston Medical Center. The role focuses on optimizing medication inventory, procurement, and distribution, containing costs, and drug shortage management, while ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. The pharmacist will work closely with inpatient and outpatient multidisciplinary teams to enhance operational efficiency, oversee medication distribution processes within the central pharmacy and hospital-based clinics, manage NDC coding activities, and maintain strong vendor relationships.

Job Description:

Position Title: Pharmacy Clinical Specialist, Supply Chain and Operations
Location: Boston Medical Center Health System
Reports To: Inpatient Pharmacy Supply Chain Manager

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage pharmaceutical supply chain coding and third-party administrator (TPA) processes, including medication inventory management, cost control, and drug shortage mitigation. Lead supply chain initiatives across hospital-based clinics throughout the Boston Medical Center Health System (BMCHS).
  • Conduct data analysis to monitor supply chain performance, identify cost-saving and revenue-enhancement opportunities, and optimize medication utilization.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with external vendors, negotiating contracts, ensuring timely deliveries, and addressing any supply chain disruptions.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams such as operations, clinical, finance, compliance, central supply, ambulatory care clinics, informatics, nursing, providers, and external vendors to ensure smooth supply chain operations and optimal medication availability.
  • Develop and maintain NDC coding within the third-party administrator system to support compliant and optimized pharmaceutical procurement across BMCHS.
  • Oversee and optimize automated dispensing systems (e.g., carousels) and medication distribution workflows to ensure regulatory compliance and operational efficiency.
  • Maintain and enforce compliance with healthcare regulations, including drug safety, reporting, and security requirements.
  • Ensure efficient use of resources and cost-effective practices throughout the pharmaceutical supply chain.
  • Support training initiatives for clinical and operational staff on supply chain processes and systems and new members of the supply chain team.

Qualifications:

  • Required: Doctor of Pharmacy or Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy and Massachusetts pharmacist license; preferred: three years of experience in pharmacy practice or completion of a PGY1 pharmacy residency.
  • Strong knowledge of pharmaceutical supply chain management and operations, inventory control, cost management, medical billing, and the 340B program.
  • Proficiency with Epic, Pyxis, and/or Omnicell required.
  • Preferred familiarity with Sentry, QuicksortRx, and Cencora platforms.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrate ability to manage time effectively, prioritize tasks, and handle multiple responsibilities.
  • Demonstrate willingness to learn new concepts and processes.
  • Possess or able to obtain nationally recognized pharmacy supply chain certificate.

Additional Skills/Experience:

  • Strong problem-solving skills, especially in supply chain and operational inefficiencies.
  • Ability to manage vendor relationships and monitor contracts to ensure efficient and cost-effective supply chain operations.
  • Attention to detail with a commitment to continuous improvement and cost-effective practices.

Compensation Range:

$112,000.00- $162,500.00

This range offers an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications. However, our approach to determining base pay is comprehensive, and a broad range of factors is considered when making an offer. This includes education, experience, skills, and certifications/licensures as they directly relate to position requirements; as well as business/organizational needs, internal equity, and market-competitiveness. In addition, BMCHS offers generous total compensation that includes, but is not limited to, benefits (medical, dental, vision, pharmacy), discretionary annual bonuses and merit increases, Flexible Spending Accounts, 403(b) savings matches, paid time off, career advancement opportunities, and resources to support employee and family well-being.
