Position currently qualifies for a telework option. Telework options are subject to change at the discretion of management.
The Structural Pest Control and Pesticides Division (SPCPD) is responsible for administering and enforcing a wide variety of programs through three Sections: Pesticides, Structural Pest Control, and Sleep Products. The Structural Pest Control (SPC) Section's overall objective is to protect public health, safety and welfare, and to promote continued environmental quality by minimizing and managing risks associated with the legal use of structural pesticides through administration and enforcement of the N.C. Structural Pest Control Law and pursuant regulations adopted by the N.C. Structural Pest Control Committee. (SPCC)
The Pesticide Specialist I will provide guidance on SPC technical subject matter to customers including but not limited to inquiries related to: NC SPC Laws and Rules, methods of SPC, recertification, maintaining the Registered Technician Training Program, scheduling of Registered Technician Schools and other related issues. This employee is expected to interact with the various SPC&P Division and other NCDA&CS personnel, other state agencies/universities and NC Pest management Association as needed to leverage resources and increase program operational efficiencies.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Recruitment Range: $50,088 - $59,000

  • Experience in communicating job-related information, procedures, policies, laws or regulations to others in a clear and concise manner in oral or written form to the regulated community and consumers.

  • Considerable knowledge of structural pest management practices, pesticide application equipment and the ability to interpret pesticide label information.

  • Experience in preparing/compiling comprehensive reports, records or technical documents utilizing Microsoft Applications.

  • Successful experience building and maintaining effective professional relationships with coworkers, other agencies, the regulated community and consumers as well as the ability to work and solve problems independently and confidently.

  • Experience in evaluating scientific, technical, environmental and/or regulatory information and using this information to draw valid conclusions necessary to facilitate the successful completion of job responsibilities.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in entomology, plant pathology, plant physiology, horticulture, chemistry, agronomy, biology, zoology, soil science, crop science, animal science, environmental or ecological science or a related scientific field of study from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of related experience in regulatory or government service programs, cooperative extension programs or agricultural research or industry; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
