Head of Defined Benefit
MassMutual is seeking an accomplished professional to lead the company’s Defined Benefit business. This role has responsibility for optimization and delivery of solutions to meet the defined benefit pension needs for sponsors and participants. Defined Benefit represents a key component of the company’s Institutional Solutions business. This role is a member of the Institutional Solutions Senior Leadership Team.
This role provides strategic and tactical leadership of this business in regards to business strategy, market development, solution design/delivery, analysis of business/case opportunities, management of new business installations and ongoing administration, and leading the future direction of our presence in the defined benefit pension market. Some of the primary goals of this role include, but are not limited to:
- Develop and maintain relationships with key consultants and advisors, including the maintenance of key account relationships
- Collaborate across the sales organization on total retirement solutions and joint customer possibilities
- Identify and manage the population of new business opportunities, seeking to optimize the company’s position in the defined benefit space
- Ensure the achievement of profitability targets and sales targets, while growing the business in a risk prudent manner
- Produce results for this business that maximize profitability, risk-return, quality/accuracy and operating efficiency
- Perform deep analysis and drive actions to manage the profitability and risk profile of the book
- Ensure the effective support and high performance of in-force and new business management
- Manage operations to ensure service delivery is high quality, accurate, timely and compliant
- Deliver a customer experience that fully meets expectations and creates valued points-of-delight for advisors, sponsors and participants
- Lead the Defined Benefit team and its cross-functional disciplines supporting this business to ensure effective product offerings and high quality servicing/support
- Maintain an active presence in the market and among the pension community, to be seen as a thought leader in this space
- Utilize competitive intelligence to enhance profitability, packaging and positioning
- Implement tools to communicate key business metrics and outcomes, and ensure necessary actions
- Contribute to the analysis and determination of pension solutions in the broader retirement space
- Partner with functions across the business and enterprise to ensure alignment and value add

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
- An accomplished professional with a proven track record of strategic and tactical leadership in driving superior business results
- Experience in institutional retirement and the financial services industry regarding customer needs, business solutions and offering/service delivery
- Knowledgeable in pension/retirement concepts including plan design, products and services, investments, laws and regulations, industry standards and the competitive environment
- Demonstrates initiative and sense of urgency; takes ownership and is results-orientated
- Ability to effectively manage and deliver on multiple concurrent deliverables
- Disciplined approach to strategic initiatives, business projects and day-to-day activities
- Extensive experience with leading strategic initiatives in a highly matrixed, collaborative organization
- Proven ability to develop, lead and manage a diverse team of professionals, both within own team and across organizational boundaries
- Ability to analyze and comprehend complex information, as well as convey complex materials to senior executives
- Comfortable dealing with both complexity and ambiguity, with ability to explore multiple solutions to a problem
- Strong analytical, critical thinking and problem solving skills
- High degree of financial acumen (actuarial, finance and economics)
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written, verbal, presentation)
- Advanced business degree and/or professional designations
- Demonstrated high potential to take on greater responsibilities
- Ability to work in the U.S. without sponsorship
