JOB OVERVIEW

The Motion Designer/Editor is a member of the GBH Creative team, reporting to the Associate Creative Director – Video Design. This role works across motion design, animation, editing and video production to create compelling work for GBH’s broadcast, digital, social, promotional and marketing platforms.

We are looking for a highly creative visual storyteller with a strong sense of design, typography, composition, pacing and sound. The ideal candidate has a strong visual eye and the ability to quickly understand different creative styles and approaches. They should be equally comfortable developing new work and stepping into existing projects—understanding the design and motion language, working within it, and extending it in a way that feels cohesive and intentional.

GBH Creative works across many different brands, programs and audiences, so versatility is essential. This role requires someone who can adapt their approach to the needs of the project rather than relying on a single personal style. They should be able to recognize what makes an existing piece of creative successful, understand how it was constructed, and apply those principles to new work.

This person will collaborate with designers, editors, copywriters, producers and creative leadership and will often take ownership of projects from handoff or initial concept through final delivery. The role requires strong creative judgment, technical problem-solving and the ability to execute efficiently within real-world schedules and budgets.

While motion design and editing are the primary focus of the position, GBH Creative works across the full video production process. Experience with shooting, lighting and directing is highly valued, and this role will have opportunities to participate in and potentially lead video shoots depending on the candidate’s experience.

What We’re Looking For

Creative versatility is particularly important in this role. GBH Creative works across many brands, audiences and types of content, so the strongest candidate will not necessarily have one recognizable personal style. Instead, they will demonstrate the ability to understand what makes a particular piece of creative work successful and apply that understanding to new challenges.

Candidates may come primarily from motion design, editing, filmmaking, graphic design, animation or a combination of disciplines. We are especially interested in candidates with a strong visual eye, technical curiosity, adaptability and the ability to learn from and build upon existing creative work.

We recognize that creative people develop along different paths. Candidates do not need to have mastered every tool or discipline listed above to be considered. A strong portfolio demonstrating creative judgment, versatility and the ability to execute high-quality work is more important than checking every technical box.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Conceptualize, design and execute motion graphics, animation and edited video for broadcast, digital, social, promotional and marketing projects.
  • Work within and build upon existing creative systems, adapting to different visual styles while maintaining established brands and design languages.
  • Develop new creative approaches when needed, including style frames, storyboards and motion tests.
  • Own projects from concept or existing creative through final delivery, working within established schedules, budgets and technical requirements.
  • Design and animate graphics packages, show opens, promotional graphics and other branded content.
  • Edit short-form video with a strong understanding of storytelling, pacing, music, sound and motion graphics.
  • Participate in video production as needed, including camera operation, lighting and directing depending on experience.
  • Collaborate with creative leadership, producers, designers and clients; present work, respond to feedback and translate creative direction into effective revisions.
  • Stay current with evolving creative tools, techniques and production workflows and share knowledge across the team.

SKILLSET
  • A strong portfolio or reel demonstrating excellent visual judgment, motion design and storytelling across a range of styles.
  • Strong graphic design fundamentals, including typography, composition, color and visual hierarchy.
  • Ability to understand, reproduce and extend existing creative work while maintaining its visual and motion language.
  • Ability to work across different visual styles rather than relying on a single aesthetic.
  • Strong working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and professional motion design and editing workflows.
  • Experience with Cinema 4D or another 3D application is valuable but not required.
  • Experience with video production, including camera operation, lighting and/or directing, is strongly preferred but not required.
  • Strong creative and technical problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently and respond effectively to feedback.
