COMPANY DESCRIPTION

FL105 is a privately held, early-stage company pioneering the use of artificial intelligence to build a new AI-driven platform utilizing digital twins and simulation, with applications that span psychological modeling, behavior prediction and beyond. Our goal is to move past chatbot-era tools and toward multi-modal systems that can reason, simulate and adapt in open-ended ways.

FL105 is backed by Flagship Pioneering, an innovation enterprise that conceives, creates, resources, and builds companies that invent breakthrough technologies to transform health care, agriculture, and sustainability. Flagship has created over 100 groundbreaking companies since 2000, including Moderna.

THE ROLE

FL105 seeking a talented Machine Learning Scientist. The successful candidate will develop and apply machine learning (ML) methods to create foundational psychological tools. This position is ideal for someone with broad expertise in machine learning, deep learning, and computational sciences who is looking to join a very dynamic and innovative environment and pioneer the next frontier of innovation, application, and human-computer interactions enabled by generative models. You will build technologies that enable others to maximize their potential.

Working at FL105, you will be able to openly collaborate with Pioneering Intelligence, the AI/ML research arm of Flagship Pioneering. You will have the opportunity to work with world-class machine learning scientists and engineers who work on cutting-edge AI research in generative modeling and large language models.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design and implement research programs to understand and emulate human behavior, personality, and emotional patterns using the state-of-the-art ML techniques
  • Collaborate with psychological experts and translate interdisciplinary insights into computational frameworks.
  • Build scalable pipelines for data collection, labeling, training, and deployment of LLM-based systems.
  • Contribute to the development of novel methods for controlling large language models.
  • Support the integration of ML systems into real-world applications with measurable outcomes.
  • Stay current with advances in AI/ML and bring forward ideas that drive scientific and product innovation.
  • Communicate findings to a multi-disciplinary audience.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced degree (PhD or MS) in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Applied Mathematics, or a related field.
  • Strong foundation in machine learning, deep learning, and natural language processing (NLP).
  • Experience working with open-source large language models (e.g., LLaMA, Gemma, Qwen) and modern ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, JAX, TensorFlow).
  • Experience with multimodal deep learning systems is a bonus.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, run, and interpret ML experiments in research or applied settings.
  • Proficiency in Python and tools for ML development, data processing, and evaluation.
  • Comfort working in ambiguous, fast-moving environments with evolving goals and limited structure.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Must be able to think independently and work collaboratively
  • Motivated and team oriented, with an ability to thrive in a multidisciplinary environment

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
