Job Description:
Job Summary:
The Legal Spend Analyst / Architect owns the business logic and definitions used across the team's analytics capabilities. While methods and definitions may vary and drift in a traditional Excel environment, this role helps codifies them to ensure consistency and auditability in a more modern software-driven analytics paradigm. This role is key to helping deliver client insights that can clearly articulate the ’so what’ behind observations and drive action toward the ’now what’ recommendations.
Essential Job Responsibilities
- Data Definitions: Own the key business definitions and calculation methods for legal spend analysis (e.g., the context/schema.md files in a dbt project) and sources of truth. Define exactly what “Average Blended Rate," "Disputed Fees," or “Total Spend" means in code logic.
- Legacy Migration: Audit existing Excel files and PowerPoint decks used by delivery stakeholders. Identify where data definitions are ambiguous and refactor them into new paradigms in modern data and analytics environment (e.g., the models/ structure in a dbt project).
- Quality/Consistency Review: Validate proper analysis of client data in traditional calculations (e.g., SQL) and AI tools.
- Reporting Support: Help drive storytelling through data for a senior audience in law departments as well as the C-suite.
Qualifications & Characteristics
- Domain Expertise: Deep background in Legal Operations, Billing Management, or Spend Analysis. You must understand the nuances of staffing models, unit costs, and timekeeper productivity for legal work.
- SQL & Python: Familiarity with SQL and Python (to understand Engineers' work).
- Communication: Ability to translate technical definitions and issues into clear terms for stakeholders (e.g., explaining the impact of missing - i.e., null - values being captured as zero in a rate book).
- Curiosity: Willingness to learn how LLMs/AI consume data to prevent hallucinated advice on key data.
- Experience working with large CSV/Parquet datasets locally preferred.
- Knowledge of specific E-Billing and Enterprise Legal Management exports (e.g., Legal Tracker, Onit, TeamConnect) a plus.
