Opportunity Overview:
This is a unique opportunity to join a high caliber engineering team that is growing quickly. As Lead Software Engineer, Architecture, you will play a key role in shaping the architectural direction of our healthcare technology platforms. You will be responsible for designing and evolving system architecture across core services, ensuring scalability, performance, and long-term resilience. Your work will balance immediate delivery needs with platform reusability, cloud native best practices, and compliance in a highly regulated environment.
What you’ll do:
- Architectural Leadership: Define and maintain the architectural blueprint for our platforms, ensuring designs meet the needs of high-volume healthcare integrations and can scale across multiple systems, payors, and third party services.
- Scalable Systems Design: Establish architectural patterns and reusable frameworks that reduce technical debt, minimize redundant development, and enable integrations to scale securely and efficiently.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with product and engineering teams to align technical designs with business goals and ensure long term adaptability.
- Security & Compliance: Build architectures that are HIPAA, FHIR, and HL7 compliant, embedding data security, auditability, and privacy into design decisions.
- Technical Guidance: Provide architectural reviews, mentor engineers on design trade offs, and champion best practices in performance, resiliency, and cloud native development.
What you’ll need:
- 8+ years in software engineering with significant experience in architectural design and system level thinking.
- Proven expertise in microservices development and AWS cloud infrastructure. Kafka for event streaming is strongly preferred. Experience with Java Spring is a plus.
- Experience working with modern data platforms that enable reliable, governed and analytics ready data.
- Familiarity with AI/ML Platforms, agentic frameworks, and evaluation methods for integrating AI agents, model pipelines and architectural design.
- Understanding of healthcare integration standards (HIPAA, FHIR, HL7) and secure architecture practices.
- Track record of leading design reviews, producing clear architectural documentation, and mentoring teams on modern software architecture.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field.

The salary range for this position is $160,000 to $175,000 annually; as part of a total benefits package which includes health insurance, 401k and bonus. In accordance with state applicable laws, Cohere is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. Individual pay decisions are ultimately based on a number of factors, including but not limited to qualifications for the role, experience level, skillset, and internal alignment.
