Job Responsibilities

This position is responsible for leading the design, reliability, and continuous improvement of digital platform applications to ensure availability, performance, and resiliency at scale. As a Lead Digital Engineer- SRE, you will drive application reliability practices across teams, mentor engineers, and collaborate with product and development leaders to deliver highly reliable services.

Major Tasks, Responsibilities, and Key Accountabilities

  • Own application reliability for critical Java-based services – deep expertise in Java is required; Python proficiency is a strong advantage for automation, tooling, and integrations.

  • Partner with engineering teams to review designs, influence architecture, and drive adoption of reliability best practices for applications.

  • Lead root-cause analysis (RCA) efforts for high-severity incidents, ensuring systemic fixes and cross-team learning.

  • Define and enforce Service Level Objectives (SLOs) and error budgets for applications, ensuring reliability is balanced with feature velocity.

  • Mentor and guide SRE and software engineers, instilling a strong culture of reliability engineering and operational excellence.

  • Oversee the design and maintenance of monitoring, observability, and alerting frameworks, ensuring visibility into application health, performance, and dependencies.

  • Drive initiatives to optimize Java application performance (latency, memory usage, garbage collection, threading, database interactions, etc.) at scale.

  • Build AI-powered applications to improve reliability, observability, and operational efficiency of critical services.

  • Advocate for resilient system designs, including fault tolerance, graceful degradation, failover strategies, and disaster recovery readiness.

  • Collaborate with security, product, and engineering teams to ensure application security and compliance are consistently met.

  • Lead efforts to automate repetitive operational tasks and streamline release readiness, leveraging Java and Python where applicable.

  • Serve as a technical escalation point for critical production issues, ensuring rapid resolution and effective communication with stakeholders.

  • Influence reliability strategy at an organizational level, identifying risks and opportunities for improvement across multiple applications.

  • Document best practices, playbooks, and incident learnings to raise the overall maturity of application operations.

Position Characteristics

  • Hands-On Technical Leadership: Ability to dive deep into code and production issues while also guiding teams strategically.

  • Reliability Evangelist: Champion reliability-first principles and influence engineering culture across multiple product teams

  • Mentorship & Coaching: Actively mentor engineers (both SRE and development) to build reliability engineering skills.

This is a hybrid role. Tuesday through Thursday are in-office days at BJ's Club Support Center in Marlborough, MA and Monday and Friday are remote days.

In accordance with the Pay Transparency requirements, the following represents a good faith estimate of the compensation range for this position. At BJ’s Wholesale Club, we carefully consider a wide range of non-discriminatory factors when determining salary. Actual salaries will vary depending on factors including but not limited to location, education, experience, and qualifications. The pay range for this position is starting from $112,000.00.
