Lead Quality Engineer

The Lead Quality Engineer based at our Curtiss-Wright Defense Solutions Tewksbury, MA site, will be responsible for leading customer facing Program Quality Engineering, Quality Contract Reviews, Supplier Quality and Inspection release/Customer Source Inspection activities as required. The candidate will drive continual improvement and development of the sites’ Quality Management System in accordance with AS9100 Quality System standards and customer requirements.

A passion for root cause analysis and corrective action, a demonstrated ability to implement and drive quality and continuous improvement into manufacturing, program and supplier quality as well as experience effectively driving quality into the product and software development process will help define the right candidate for this position. A background in Aerospace & Defense Programs, hardware & software development programs with CMMI Capability Level 3 are considered significant assets.

This individual should be a self-starter and have strong communications skills as well as having the ability to engage across all levels of the organization in building effective relationships. This position will interact with our customers.

Location: Tewksbury, MA – Onsite

Salary Range: $ 108,900 - 145,000 per year plus bonus

Your Challenge

  • Executes QMS Compliance Activities via internal audits. Assists with external audits (AS9100, CMMI, DCMA (US Gov.) audits as well as Aerospace, and Prime Defense Customers) to keep programs on track and resolve problems real time.

  • Manages the Program Customer Quality processes, ensuring quick response and effective corrective actions on customer raised SCARS, audit findings and feedback obtained through the Customer Service Index (CSI) process.

  • Supports the development and implementation of the site’s AS9100 compliant Quality Management System through partnering with departments in developing SOP’s instructions and guidance documents.

  • Facilitates the corrective action process through the site, including implementation/improvement to tools, training, and metrics.

  • Supports the planning and execution of the internal and supplier audit plans designed to ensure sustained compliance to AS9100.

  • Interact with Program Managers, Supply Chain, Operations, Contracts and other Engineering disciplines to ensure compliance to Quality requirements and resolve Customer and Product Line nonconformances as required.

  • Drives the 8D CAPA process through the organization, including implementation/improvement to tools, training, and metrics.

  • Manages the Customer Quality processes, BOE’s, Proposals & Contract reviews as well as ensuring quick response and effective corrective actions on customer raised SCARS, audit findings and feedback obtained through the Customer Service Index (CSI) process.

  • Manages the Supplier Quality process (including performing quality audits and administering the SCAR process).

  • Interacts with Supply Chain, Operations, Contracts and other Engineering disciplines to ensure compliance to Quality requirements and resolve Customer and Product Line nonconformances as required.

  • Provides QA support on the implementation of Engineering Change Orders, Program Instructions, Waivers and Material Substitution Requests

  • Develops and maintains monthly & quarterly quality metrics.

  • Supports quality in the product life cycle (Proposal, Design, Production, Services and Sustainment.

  • Performs COPQ Data Extraction / Analysis /Compilation and improvements

  • Ad-Hoc Travel will be required to visit customers, carry out audits and meet periodically to discuss quality plans face-to-face at other CWDS sites within the division.

  • Performs data pack and shipping document review.

  • Liaise with vendors on quality related issues.

  • Manages the site’s calibration process/external services

What You Bring

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace/Electrical/Mechanical/Software Engineering or technical equivalent with a minimum of 10 years of prior related experience or Graduate degree with a minimum of 7 years of prior related experience

  • In lieu of a degree, candidates may be considered with a minimum of 10 years of prior related experience specifically within the aerospace and defense industry combined w/military experience commensurate in with the position responsibilities, skills and experience required

  • Experience with the implementation and maintenance of a registered AS9100 QMS applied to both manufacturing and software development

  • Approachable hands-on style with the ability to engage with people at all levels of management

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; composing written reports and other communications is required

  • Superior analytical skills, capable of using current computer analysis tools (Microsoft Office, Outlook plus others applicable programs)

  • Encourages high level collaboration of cross-functional teams

  • Knowledgeable in the interpretation and application of the following standards: J-STD-001, IPC- A-600, IPC-A-610 Rev D Class 3, IPC/WHMA-A-620, IPC-7711/7721

  • Experience with CMMI Level 3 capability appraisal process is a plus

  • 8D or other structured problem-solving methodology expertise

  • ASQ CMQOE and/or ASQ CQE will be considered significant assets

  • Experience interfacing directly with major customers on Quality issues.

  • Knowledge of tooling Calibration program management, recalls, calibration schedules and asset maintenance

  • Experience with SAP S4 Hana ERP Systems applications is an asset

  • Knowledge and use of SQL, Python and or PowerBi dashboard developments is considered a plus

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

  • High degree of Product Integrity and Ethical standards

  • Proficient in the interpretation of complex engineering drawings, schematics and process plans
