Lead Experience Designer

Use service design and UX craft to transform how payers and providers collaborate—improving care, cutting waste, and shaping the future of healthcare.

Location: United States – Boston Job Type: Full-time Individual Contributor (Manager-Level, Non-People Manager) Team: Experience Design, Data & Ecosystem Platform

About the Role

We’re excited to welcome a Lead Experience Designer who brings together service design strategy and hands-on UX/UI design to support our athenaPayer portfolio of products. You’ll help lead the design of experiences that connect payers and providers—streamlining workflows, improving care coordination, and reducing administrative waste across the healthcare ecosystem.

As a strategic IC leader, you’ll operate with a high degree of ownership, partnering across disciplines to shape product direction and deliver impactful design solutions. You’ll apply systems thinking, behavioral design, and workflow-level UX to create cohesive service experiences that unlock value for both payers and providers.

The right person is knowledgeable about how the U.S. healthcare system functions, is comfortable engaging with busy healthcare professionals, and understands how to design experiences for behavior change. We seek a curious and flexible designer who can move from opportunity discovery one day to service blueprinting the next and then dig in to detailed clinician workflows the next. You’ll help us reimagine and build out a cohesive end-to-end service experience that builds loyalty and ensures our customers maximize the benefits of our products.

What You’ll Do

  • Define a holistic customer experience vision for a portfolio of data products, ensuring the experience of learning about, onboarding to, using and reporting on our products is intuitive and effective

  • Lead the end-to-end design process: from customer discovery, user research, and service blueprinting through to prototyping and detailed design of digital service experiences

  • Design elegant dashboard and service experiences that balance user needs, technical constraints, and business goals

  • Facilitate cross-product brainstorms and design workshops to align on elegant solutions that incorporate data at the point of care in a way that empowers clinical users while positively influencing behavior

  • Embrace modern AI tools and foster an experimental mindset within the team to try new approaches and methods for design & innovation

  • Partner closely with a cross-functional team, including product strategists, product managers, data analysts, engineers, and researchers to grow an exciting and innovative part of our business

What Makes You a Great Fit

We’re looking for someone with strength in both strategic and tactical design, as well as curiosity, collaboration, and a passion for healthcare transformation.

Must-Have Qualifications

  • 5-10 years of professional experience in relevant roles (i.e. UX/UI, service design, strategic design) in complex, data-rich domains such as healthcare, finance, insurance, or enterprise SaaS.

  • Demonstrated track record of bringing human-centered designs from early concept to implementation to post-launch iteration

  • Strong skills in user research, journey mapping, service blueprinting, and synthesizing insights into design opportunities.

  • Fluency in interaction design, data visualization, prototyping, and usability principles, particularly in dashboards or interfaces for technical users.

  • Comfort operating autonomously and leading design direction for product areas or initiatives.

  • Clear, inclusive communication skills, written, visual, and verbal.

Nice-to-Have (Preferred, Not Required)

  • Experience with AI tools (e.g. Figma Make, ChatGPT) and designing AI-integrated experiences.

  • Familiarity with payer workflows (e.g. claims, risk scoring, population health).

  • Experience facilitating design thinking workshops, concept sprints, or cross-functional co-design sessions.

About You

  • You’re a systems thinker who can see the forest and the trees.

  • You have a knack for identifying unmet needs and envisioning new experiences that others don’t see.

  • You love tackling messy, ambiguous problems and simplifying complexity for users.

  • You enjoy both crafting pixels and influencing strategy, and you don’t want to be pigeonholed.

  • You’re energized by the mission of improving healthcare and aren’t intimidated by domain complexity.

  • You’re naturally curious, adaptable, and always learning new things, whether it’s vibe coding tools, agentic design, or AI-assisted research

What You’ll Get

  • The opportunity to shape the future of healthcare experiences, working with a passionate, collaborative team in an entrepreneurial section of athenahealth.

  • A high-impact IC role with strategic visibility and autonomy in a growing part of our business.

  • A supportive environment that values experimentation, learning, and responsible innovation.

  • Access to cutting-edge tools, mentorship, and professional growth pathways.

  • A mission-driven company committed to improving lives through better data, better experiences, and better care coordination.

If you love solving complex systems, building things that matter, and want to work where design is a force for change—let’s talk.
