Job Description

Job Summary:

Independently provide advanced technical services to customers for one or more of the following: computer hardware, mobile devices, software and network related problems, and accessibility. Resolve complex problems, consulting with manager on sensitive or critical mass issues.

Job-Specific Responsibilities:

Harvard Medical School IT is seeking an IT Support Learning Designer to champion the technological empowerment of the HMS community and affiliated faculty. In this pivotal role, the Learning Designer will lead the development of IT training resources and documentation, design and implement engaging digital and in-person learning experiences, and facilitate effective communication around technology initiatives and service changes. Serving as a bridge between IT subject matter experts and end users, the Learning Designer will collaborate with stakeholders across the institution to identify knowledge gaps, enhance accessibility, and drive the continuous improvement of user education. Reporting to the Director of Technology Communication & User Experience, this individual will apply human-centered and accessible design principles through platforms such as Canvas, Teams, and ServiceNow, ensuring all deliverables are inclusive, effective, and aligned with organizational goals. We are looking for someone who takes a user-focused approach to solution-finding, enjoys the opportunity to dig deep into technical subject areas, and cares deeply about the learner experience.  

Core Duties:

  • Design, develop, and deliver engaging IT learning experiences, including digital, blended, and in-person training, for faculty, staff, students, and affiliates across HMS.
  • Create, maintain, and improve IT documentation, user guides, and knowledge base content that address community knowledge gaps and promote effective technology use.
  • Collaborate with IT subject matter experts and stakeholders to identify learning needs, translate complex technical concepts into accessible learning materials, and support consistent messaging.
  • Participate in outreach and communication efforts related to technology initiatives, service updates, and system changes, ensuring timely, clear, and audience-appropriate messaging.
  • Apply human-centered design and accessibility best practices (WCAG, ADA, Section 508) to all learning and communication deliverables to ensure inclusivity and usability.
  • Evaluate training effectiveness through data-driven assessments and feedback, implementing continuous improvements to programs and materials.
  • Serve as a resource and advisor to IT teams on instructional design, communication strategies, and digital accessibility.
  • Write news and emails explaining the impact of technology changes and outages and guide IT staff in their communications and presentations about technology.
  • Contribute to broader IT community engagement and awareness through events, workshops, and cross-departmental collaborations. 

 

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Minimum of two years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience.

Additional Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Expert in digital learning design, including eLearning, blended, asynchronous, and synchronous course development.
  • Skilled in technical writing, documentation management, and corporate communications for knowledge bases, manuals, and process guides.
  • Proficient in knowledge management, facilitating expert-to-novice knowledge transfer, and content curation.
  • Current and conversant on AI integration in education, including ethical and responsible use.
  • Advocate for digital accessibility and inclusion, ensuring compliance with WCAG, ADA, and Section 508 standards as well as University policies and procedures.
  • Competent in graphic design and visual communication using tools such as LucidChart, Microsoft Office and Suite, Adobe Creative Cloud, Salesforce Marketing, MailChimp, and web-based graphics.

Additional Information

  • Appointment End Date: This is a two-year term position from the date of hire, with the possibility of extension, contingent upon work performance and continued funding to support the position. 
  • Standard Hours/Schedule: 35 hours per week

Work Format Details

This position has been determined by school or unit leaders that some of the duties and responsibilities can be effectively performed at a non-Harvard location. The work schedule and location will be set by the department at its discretion and based upon operational needs. When not working at a Harvard or Harvard-designated location, employees in hybrid positions must work in a Harvard registered state in compliance with the University’s Policy on Employment Outside of Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
