Overview

At BHSI, we believe in empowering our customers to navigate a world full of uncertainty. Property and Casualty (P&C) Insurance plays a vital role in helping individuals and businesses manage risk by transferring potential financial losses to insurers.

As an AI & Emerging Technology Intern, you will help colleagues across BHSI, from underwriting and claims to operations and finance, find practical ways to use AI in their daily work. You will sit with teams to understand how they work, spot tasks where AI can save time or improve quality, evaluate existing tools, build prototypes and automations where off-the-shelf tools fall short, and help people adopt what works.

BHSI is building a forever business, and we want you to consider being a part of it!

Learn more about our unique culture and history.

Opportunity:

We are seeking a motivated and curious individual to join our Boston office with the AI & Emerging Technology team as a Summer Intern. This 12-week paid internship offers hands-on experience with generative AI and emerging technology in a real business setting. Along the way, you will learn how technology supports the Insurance Life Cycle (pricing a quote through to a claim) and how a specialty insurer evaluates new ideas responsibly. This is your opportunity to gain experience, build your skills in a professional setting, contribute meaningfully, and be part of a team that’s transforming the insurance industry.

You will:

  • Meet with colleagues across the business to learn how they work and identify everyday tasks where AI could help, such as drafting, summarizing, researching, and reviewing documents
  • Try out AI tools and approaches against those tasks, and recommend which ones fit and how to use them well
  • Build prototypes and workflow automations using AI platforms and APIs, such as assistants, document summarization and extraction, or search over internal knowledge
  • Write, test, and document code with guidance from experienced engineers
  • Help people adopt AI by creating how-to guides, prompt examples, and short demos, and by supporting training and office hours
  • Track the impact of AI solutions, such as time saved, quality, and user feedback, and share findings with the team and business stakeholders
  • Keep up with new AI tools and features and assess what they could mean for BHSI
  • Apply responsible AI practices, including data privacy, security, and human review of AI-generated output
  • Take ownership of assigned work and follow it through to completion, both independently and with the team
  • Participate in the team’s normal processes, discussions, and meetings
  • Communicate progress, questions, challenges, and blockers with the team
  • Present your work to technology and business leaders at the end of the internship

You will be part of a small, hands-on team that values collaboration, experimentation, and continuous learning. Your work will directly shape how people at BHSI use AI more effectively.

What you will learn:

  • How to turn a colleague’s day-to-day pain point into a practical AI solution
  • Hands-on skills with today’s AI tools, including prompt design and judging the quality of AI output
  • How to take an AI idea from prototype to a tested solution people use
  • What it takes to help people change how they work and adopt new tools
  • How a specialty insurer weighs new technology for business value, risk, and fit
  • How AI and technology support the insurance lifecycle and our customers
  • How to explain technical work to business audiences
  • A clearer idea of technology and AI career paths at BHSI

Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or another STEM discipline, or prior experience and demonstrated passion for technology
  • Hands-on experience using generative AI tools (such as ChatGPT, Claude, or Copilot) through coursework, personal projects, or prior work, and ideas about how they can make work easier
  • Interest in understanding how people work and in solving their problems
  • Programming experience in Python is a plus; JavaScript or TypeScript is also a plus
  • Familiarity with REST APIs, MCPs, Git, and cloud platforms is a plus
  • Analytical, problem-solving, and conceptual skills
  • Curiosity and the ability to learn new tools quickly
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including explaining technical ideas to non-technical audiences
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and manage time effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong focus, attention to detail, and accuracy
  • Experience with MS Office applications
  • All candidates must have permanent work authorization in the United States

Attributes & Values:

  • Curiosity and a drive to experiment and learn
  • Strategic thinking and critical analysis
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Customer-focused mindset
  • Embodies respect and integrity
