You know the moment. It’s the first notes of that song you love, the intro to your favorite movie, or simply the sound of someone you love saying “hello.” It’s in these moments that sound matters most.
At Bose, we believe sound is the most powerful force on earth. We’ve dedicated ourselves to improving it for more than 60 years. And we’re passionate down to our bones about making whatever you’re listening to a little more magical.
The Engineering team at Bose is a thriving, passionate, deeply skilled team of professionals from a broad range of disciplines and experiences, who share a common goal—to create products that provide transformative sound experiences.
Job DescriptionThe Immersive Sound group within Bose’s Research Organization is responsible for designing first-of-a-kind technology to create extraordinary life-like audio experiences. Our members possess a mix of backgrounds in areas such as engineering, computer science, mathematics, acoustics, physics, and music. In the Bose tradition, we focus not only on developing cutting-edge technical solutions but, also, on developing products that deliver unparalleled end-to-end user experiences.
Our immersive audio headsets create a rich, transformative experience where sound is perceived as coming from a stage in front of you rather than through a pair of headphones. Such experiences are achieved by utilizing sensing technologies and advanced signal processing. We are looking for an aspiring scientist or engineer with a strong background in physics, sensing technologies, and/or signal processing for a 6 month co-op to help us prototype new systems and build new algorithms for our next generation of immersive audio products. Examples of specific projects you could work on include:
• Collecting data with various physical sensors to estimate a user’s bodily motions.
• Extracting physically relevant features from different combinations of collected sensor data in MATLAB or Python.
• Modeling new sensors and writing sensor fusion algorithms to demonstrate performance improvements over existing techniques.
• Deploying new algorithms to prototyping systems to demonstrate new user experiences
The sky is the limit in terms of your ability to make lasting contributions to Bose’s line of immersive audio technologies.
Responsibilities
The primary responsibilities for this position include:
• Collecting datasets using pre-existing prototype hardware.
• Adding new sensors to pre-existing prototypes.
• Performing analyses of algorithms on collected datasets, developing visualizations, and presenting your results.
• Integrating solutions into existing form factors/hardware when appropriate.
In addition to the above, your role may involve some of the following:
• Performing literature reviews on various research topics and presenting your findings to our team.
• Participating in code and/or design reviews.
• Designing and/or helping to run demonstrations.
Required Skills
• Pursuing or just completed a degree in engineering, physics, computer science, mathematics, or a related field.
• Comfort collecting data from physical sensors (e.g. IMU, GPS, microphone, IR sensors, etc.), as well as experience cleaning collected data to mitigate noise, anomalies, etc.
• Strong background in signal processing: time and frequency analysis, sampling of continuous signals, linear filter design, feedback, stability, etc.
• Fluency in a standard computational framework such as MATLAB or Python.
• Solid presentation and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
• Familiarity with standard software development practices (version control, virtual environments, etc.)
• Familiarity with material covered in introductory linear algebra and probability and statistics courses.
- Familiarity with Kalman Filtering techniques for sensor fusion.
Nice-to-Haves
• Hands-on familiarity with machine learning techniques.
• Experience collecting sensor data from human subjects.’
