The HR Generalist will manage HR operations, compliance, onboarding, performance management, and culture initiatives, ensuring effective people practices.
About Butter Payments:
At Butter Payments, we’re on a mission to eliminate involuntary churn and make recurring payments seamless. Every year, billions of dollars are lost due to failed payments. Butter leverages machine learning, deep financial data partnerships, and behavioral insights to ensure the right payments go through at the right time—without friction. We're backed by world-class investors like Atomic, Norwest Venture Partners, SpringTride, Transpose Platform, and we're growing fast.
The Role:
We’re looking for an experienced and proactive HR Generalist / People Operations Generalist to join our growing team. You’ll be the go-to person for all things People—supporting HR operations, compliance, onboarding, performance, and company culture. This is a high-impact role for someone who’s excited to help build and scale a people-first organization.
You’ve ideally been the sole HR person before, or operated with a high degree of autonomy, and are confident handling both strategy and execution. You’ve helped scale a company from ~50 to 150 people, and know what it takes to build strong people foundations at a fast-growing, distributed company.
What You’ll Do:
- Own core HR operations: employee onboarding/offboarding, benefits administration, policy management, and compliance across states
- Manage and optimize Rippling as our HRIS—driving automation and reporting
- Partner on leveling & career frameworks, supporting managers with performance management and role clarity as we grow
- Support hiring processes: assist with job descriptions, offers, and candidate experience in collaboration with recruiting
- Help scale the company thoughtfully: advise on people practices and systems that support a distributed, high-growth team
- Lead engagement and culture initiatives that promote connection, inclusion, and feedback loops across time zones
- Ensure compliance with labor laws and benefits regulations, especially for a remote-first, multi-state team
What We’re Looking For:
- 4+ years of hands-on HR/People experience, ideally in a startup or tech environment
- Experience working at or scaling a company from ~50 to 150 employees
- Comfortable being a “team of one” or working autonomously with strong ownership
- Prior experience with Rippling HRIS (must-have)
- Exposure to or ownership of leveling, career frameworks, and performance cycles
- Experience supporting a distributed U.S. workforce across multiple states
- Knowledge of employment law, compliance, and HR best practices
- Clear communicator, detail-oriented, and people-centric
We are focused on building a diverse and inclusive workforce. If you’re excited about this role, but do not meet 100% of the qualifications listed above, we encourage you to apply.
