At UN/COMMON, we’re not your typical Shopify e-commerce agency. We bring bold, strategic thinking to mission-first brands and deliver real growth through meaningful digital experiences. Our team of creatives, developers, and strategists is passionate about challenging conventions and producing exceptional work while keeping things fun, fast-moving, and future-focused.
The OpportunityWe’re looking for a Head of Technology who’s ready to lead with vision, operate with precision, and inspire a growing global team. This role blends high-level technical strategy with hands-on leadership to drive innovation across our development function.
You’ll report directly to the Director of Delivery and work alongside our executive leadership to shape the future of our tech strategy and client delivery model.
If you're energized by solving complex problems, mentoring talent, and helping mission-driven brands scale, we want to meet you.
You’re a strategic and solutions-driven leader who brings both big-picture thinking and deep technical understanding. You thrive in environments where collaboration, innovation, and ownership are expected. Your focus is on building systems that scale, teams that thrive, and outcomes that matter.
- Lead and grow a high-performing development and quality assurance team across North America, South America, and Europe
- Own team planning and capacity management, ensuring delivery goals are met through effective resource forecasting and project alignment
- Serve as the technical lead in client conversations, guiding strategy, resolving escalations, and translating complexity into clear, actionable plans
- Partner with Sales and Delivery leadership to scope projects, define feasibility, and ensure technical solutions align with business needs and timelines
- Champion a modern, forward-looking technology vision that aligns with our agency’s goals and evolving client needs
- Build and refine systems and processes that elevate efficiency, code quality, and team collaboration
- Lead the integration of emerging technologies, including AI, to improve workflows and push innovation
- Foster a culture of continuous learning through coaching, technical development, and leadership support for team leads
- Offer direct technical contribution as needed to support project momentum and team delivery
- Communicate technical concepts clearly to clients and stakeholders of all levels
- You’ll guide a distributed team of collaborative, highly skilled engineers and quality assurance professionals who thrive in a culture of autonomy, accountability, and continuous improvement. We value proactive leadership, open communication, and a shared commitment to creating exceptional work.
- This is a fully remote role open to candidates worldwide. While we support flexible work arrangements, most collaboration occurs within Eastern and Central North American time zones. Availability during standard business hours in those zones is preferred to support real-time coordination with clients and internal teams.
- At least 7 years of progressive experience in software development or engineering, including hands-on work with modern tech stacks and scalable systems
- A minimum of 3 years in a leadership role, managing and mentoring technical teams in high-growth, agency, or e-commerce environments
- Expert-level knowledge of the Shopify ecosystem including Liquid, JavaScript (ES6+), CSS, APIs, Shopify CLI, Checkout Extensibility, Functions, Git and GitHub
- Deep experience with headless commerce architectures such as Hydrogen and Oxygen
- Proven success managing complex third-party integrations such as ERP, CRM, and custom APIs
- Strong technical instincts paired with a sharp understanding of user experience and interface best practices
- Ability to align engineering strategies with business goals, balancing innovation, scalability, and performance
- Skilled at collaborating across functions, mentoring teams, and leading with clarity
- Experience customizing and extending Shopify apps through private or custom code
- Comfortable working asynchronously and across time zones in a fast-paced, client-facing role
- Versatility across platforms such as WooCommerce, Magento, or other e-commerce systems is a plus
