The Role:
As the General Manager for Rare Diseases, you will report to the Chief Marketing Officer and have end-to-end accountability for the Rare Disease Business Unit (BU), including mRNA-3927 for Propionic Acidemia (PA), mRNA-3705 for Methylmalonic Acidemia (MMA) and a pipeline of pre-clinical candidates. This is an enterprise-level leadership role with cross-functional accountability.
In addition to managing the P&L, setting strategy and leading commercialization efforts, you will integrate activities across critical functions such as Manufacturing, Research and Clinical Development. While you will have dotted-line functional reports from these areas, you will also maintain dual accountability to relevant enterprise leaders. This includes ensuring that strategic planning, execution, and communication align with the broader corporate goals and stakeholder expectations.
You will also serve as the Rare Disease Franchise Lead, managing the marketing team directly, while also acting as a key integrator across internal teams to drive prioritization, resourcing, and global-to-local readiness for successful asset launches and long-term portfolio growth.
Here’s What You’ll Do:
Lead Moderna’s Rare Disease Franchise with full strategic, operational, and financial accountability
Manage the Business Unit P&L
Own the integrated franchise strategy, including pipeline prioritization, lifecycle planning, and long-range forecasting
Develop compelling business cases and value narratives that shape investment and development decisions
Represent Rare Disease in governance forums and drive cross-functional priority-setting aligned with company strategy
Orchestrate execution across Marketing, R&D, Medical, Access, CMC, and Supply to deliver launches on time and within budget
Shape the go-to-market model, brand strategy, and external positioning to ensure global readiness and local adaptability
Partner with country and regional teams to drive alignment, insight-sharing, and sustained execution across markets
Build and scale commercial infrastructure and capabilities to support asset launches and portfolio expansion
Identify and develop long-term opportunity spaces and commercial innovation within the rare disease landscape
Lead structured planning, forecasting, budget management, and KPI tracking across the franchise
Influence enterprise-level portfolio prioritization and long-term growth strategy through active participation in global forums
Here’s What You’ll Need (Minimum Qualifications):
Bachelor’s degree required
15+ years of progressive experience with significant commercial leadership exposure
Proven track record in end-to-end portfolio leadership, including launch execution, and lifecycle management
Direct U.S. launch experience in rare or specialty disease areas
Experience leading high-performing teams and cross-functional collaborations
Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table (Preferred Qualifications):
Full P&L ownership and accountability for the BU
Experience building and scaling commercial infrastructure in emerging or fast-growth therapeutic areas
Depth in rare or ultra-rare diseases, with working knowledge of clinical and regulatory pathways.
Strong understanding of global healthcare systems, access models, and payer engagement
Demonstrated success building and scaling teams in ambiguous or early-growth environments
Proven ability to influence across R&D, Medical, Access, and G&A functions
Strategic thinker with high learning agility, systems orientation, and disciplined operational follow-through
