AI and ML at Flagship Pioneering:
Flagship Pioneering is a scientific innovation engine that invents and builds companies that change the world. We bring entrepreneurial scientists together with experienced company builders and assemble the capital to allow them to take courageous leaps in human health, sustainability, technology and beyond. Artificial intelligence is core to how Flagship conceives and builds companies. We call our approach polyintelligence: human creativity and nature’s intelligence integrating and coexisting with artificial intelligence. This model runs across our ecosystem, where teams pair advances in AI and machine learning with foundational science to move from idea to concept faster and build AI-native companies that were previously out of reach.

Who we are looking for:
Computational scientists and engineers with broad interests and experience applying deep technical experience to out of distribution scientific questions. Standalone implementation isn’t the goal, it is creatively spotting opportunities where extension, modification and combination of bleeding edge computational and technical approaches can unlock new capabilities to solve consequential problems. Strong candidates will combine software engineering fundamentals with a readiness to embrace agentic development tools/practices and have experience implementing machine learning models and workflows across multiple model classes or scientific domains.

The Experience:
You will collaborate with Flagship Origination Teams and fellow ML scientists/engineers to explore what is made possible by big leaps beyond the current capabilities of AI. You will begin by asking ‘What if’ across a variety of ideas and building a ‘future backwards’ case for what needs to be true for them to become a reality. You will explore the tradeoffs across multiple options, including what and how much data is needed and where it might come from. You will work towards implementation and evaluation plans that enable us to address the real uncertainties, not just what is easy to measure.
With a project defined, you will begin to implement, evaluate and iterate. You will leverage Flagship's scalable GPU compute resources, data from our ecosystem, and the extensive expertise available across our teams.  You will implement the benchmarking capabilities needed to measure what matters and evaluate your designs. We will learn along the way and be ready to pivot on methods. Final work products are never just a model or a paper, they are wholistic answers to the future backwards questions we ask ourselves when originating the next big leap company.

The pay range for this role is $7,000 - $9,000 per month. This role is a short-term engagement that is not eligible for health and welfare benefits. Compensation and benefits information is based on Flagship Pioneering's good faith estimate as of the date of publication and may be modified in the future.

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
