The Financial Accountant is a member of the Accounting group reporting to the Accounting Manager. This individual will work with the Accounting team to prepare quarterly and annual statutory financial statements in accordance with statutory accounting requirements and assist with bank and cash account certifications. This will include preparing journal entries and supporting schedules, executing proper controls, preparing detailed reconciliations, and preparing reporting in support of fulfilling the Company's financial filings on a timely basis. They will assist in providing support to accounting management in an effort to support others within Finance, support internal and external routine audits, and other ad hoc tasks as they arise.
Key Responsibilities:
Prepares and processes accounting journal entries for routine accounts. Works with others in the Company to obtain necessary details behind accounting entries or to resolve any discrepancies.
Reconciles financial balances for balance sheet accounts to underlying support, and either independently or with the assistance of other team members is able to research and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner.
Assists in the preparation of the quarterly and annual financial statements and performs additional analysis to prepare and analyze Cash Flows.
Takes initiative to learn the premium, general ledger, and banking systems utilized by Accounting to use effectively in our processes. Develops understanding of accounting processes and controls within the department.
Demonstrates a progressing understanding of statutory accounting and reporting requirements applicable to Arbella. Is able to grasp accounting technical guidance of basic accounting scenarios. Contributes to team efforts of establishing new procedures within the accounting records.
Performs monthly analysis of escheated checks and prepares the related due diligence letters to be sent out to policyholders from various states.
Performs research over differences between the system, the bank, and/or the general ledger by digging into timing variances, daily bank activity, reports, etc.
Establishes relationships with the Billing and Collections department in collaboration efforts to reconcile any cash or bank differences.
Supports internal and external auditors. Works with other Accountants to assist auditors to provide them with further analysis or explanations related to the information they need.
Supports the implementation of new systems, accounting platforms, and efficiencies as they arise.
Works well in team environment to meet all deadlines and prioritize responsibilities.
Maintains a high level of detail orientation throughout daily tasks and the ability to research and resolve various reconciling items.
Maintains in fact and appearance the utmost level of confidence, integrity and trust.
Maintains an approachable attitude and promotes positive customer service in all dealings internally and externally.
Key Requirements:
Bachelors Degree, concentration in Accounting, plus 0-2 years experience in the accounting field.
Internship/Co-op experience desirable.
Strong analytical and communication skills.
Proficiency in MS Office; advanced Excel skills preferred.
