The Federal Systems Technology Department of the USFGMD is responsible for services supporting a charter of implementing and integrating complex systems sold worldwide to the US Federal Government. As a Federal Network Engineer (ASTRO/WAVE), you will be exposed to a wide variety of communications requirements in both the Pre Sale and Post Sale phases of a project. These applications span the entire breadth of the US Federal Government throughout the world.
Job Description
This role supports a Federal Government Agency with a complex, large-scale deployment of specialized ASTRO systems and solutions. The Federal Network Engineer (ASTRO/WAVE) is a critical technical role, working both on-site and remotely with Program Management, other Engineers, and the Federal Government Agency Customer to achieve communication goals.
This position is responsible for the architectural network design of backhaul solutions for ASTRO 25, WAVE VoIP, and adjacent technologies, ensuring the creation of highly secure, easily managed, mission-critical IP networks for Federal, State, and Local government agencies.
Daily work involves developing technical strategies, leading various migration efforts, presenting to the customer, and creating comprehensive documentation. The Federal Network Engineer will be hands-on, executing in-field integrations, migrations, and expansion plans they have developed. This team also serves as a high-level escalation point for sustainment activities and direct customer interaction.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and define technical network architecture designs for ASTRO 25 and adjacent technologies backhaul networks.
Develop strategies for and execute complex system migrations, expansions, and integrations.
Provide technical leadership for the engineering community in network design best practices.
Consult with Pre-Sale and Post-Sale Design teams to establish strategy, direction, and implementation plans.
Conduct network topology assessments and troubleshooting.
Create and document detailed network drawings.
Provide on-site and remote troubleshooting for program systems, assisting technical and engineering resources with system maintenance.
Continually evaluate and work with third-party vendor equipment/contractors to ensure requirements are met.
Location & Travel:
Must be able to work on-site in Linthicum, MD, and Washington D.C. 3–5 times per week, based on program needs.
Ability to travel up to 50% domestically to support customer projects.
Security & Citizenship:
Must be a U.S. citizen with ability to obtain necessary security clearance as required by government contract(s).
Must currently hold or be able to obtain a TSSCI (YW) clearance.
Must be willing to obtain a DHS Public Trust Clearance.
Legal authorization to work in the U.S. indefinitely is required. Employer work permit sponsorship is not available for this position.
Technical Experience & Skills:
Minimum of 10 years of experience in Land Mobile Radio (LMR).
Demonstrated experience developing and executing infrastructure upgrades.
Extensive technical knowledge of deployed ASTRO and WAVE technologies, including:
Advanced networking and cyber security principles.
Active Directory administration.
ASTRO applications (UNC, PM, UEM).
ESXi, RHEL.
Host Based Security platforms and Public Key Infrastructure (PKI).
WAVE technology.
Demonstrated proficiency in developing, deploying, and troubleshooting IP networks.
Experience with firewalls and security-related appliances.
Solid ability to administer and troubleshoot in an IT-type environment.
Required to lift equipment of approximately 50 lbs.
Professional Attributes:
Demonstrated ability to balance multiple concurrent responsibilities of varying priorities.
Strong self-management, organization skills, and a high attention to detail.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to produce high-quality, clear, and professional documentation.
Applicants must be proficient with Microsoft Office products and G-Suite applications.
Technical Expertise:
10+ years in IT, Networking, Field Engineering, Technical Field Service, System Technician/Specialist, Radio Frequency, or Land Mobile Radio.
2+ years of hands-on experience with Motorola ASTRO technology, including Zone Core, ASTRO Networking, CSS, CPS, Microsoft Active Directory, host-based security suite, AXS/MCC7500 dispatch, and VOIP Logging.
Experience with routing protocols (BGP, OSPF, ISIS) and MPLS design/deployments.
Experience with LAN switching protocols, such as G8032 ring protection.
Experience with manufacturer hardware: Juniper, Nokia, HP, Fortinet.
Knowledge of different media types (Metro Ethernet, Frame-Relay, Ethernet, SONET) and physical layer components (fiber, copper, microwave).
Good understanding of effective network design methodologies and experience troubleshooting and assessing live networks.
Experience with use of command line and/or GUI interfaces to provision equipment.
Experience in scripting/programming is a plus.
Experience with Motorola ASTRO 25 architecture is a plus.
Experience with Network Management Applications (Solarwinds, JUNO-Space, Nokia SAM/NFM-P, Provision) is a plus.
RF Theory and Operations knowledge.
Certifications (Minimum Preferred):
Juniper Network Certified Internet Associate (JNCIA), Nokia Routing Specialist I (NRS I), or equivalent.
CompTIA Network+, MCSE, and/or CISSP.
Juniper Security or Routing.
ESXi and RHEL.
Motorola Solutions ASTRO Infrastructure.
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Information Technology (IT) or Engineering.
Soft Skills:
Strong self-motivation and excellent interpersonal skills for working collaboratively with colleagues, customers, and third-party service professionals (Motorola Solutions’ customers, MSS community, Sales, Project Management, and Customer Service teams).
Experience with Microsoft Visio, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google applications.

Target Base Salary Range: $90,000 - $110,000 USD
