Key Responsibilities Include: 

  • Developing and growing a talented group of designers by providing:
    • Regular formal and informal feedback.
    • Opportunities and support to develop either the leadership or individual contributor career paths.
  • Leading and facilitating strategic cross-functional workshops that address complex challenges, driving alignment and decision-making including differentiating between incremental improvements and net-new business solutions.
  • Overseeing the use of design exploration, content strategy, user testing, and research to inform and drive solution roadmaps, experience improvements, and prioritization.
  • Collaborating with key business partners across the organization to establish strategic direction for the experiences that will achieve John Hancock’s long-term vision and goals.
  • Partnering with Director and lateral Experience Design Manager as a unified leadership team representing HCD with U.S. Segment and Global partners to:
    • Promote the value of Human Centered Design by leading and supporting the team’s successful delivery of their design work and through effective storytelling.
    • Recruit new Human Centered Design talent when required.
    • Enhance storytelling techniques by designers.
    • Embrace current and emerging best practices and digital standards, pushing us from good to great.

Desired qualifications for this position include: 

  • A minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in Human Centered Design, with a proven track record of leading successful digital product initiatives at scale. 
  • 1-2 years of demonstrated experience leading and mentoring design teams, with a focus on fostering collaboration with cross-functional teams, including engineering, marketing, and product management.  
  • Proven ability to inspire and guide teams towards achieving design excellence.
  • A robust portfolio that showcases a diverse range of design projects, highlighting your design process, craftsmanship, and the successful outcomes of your work. The portfolio should demonstrate your ability to lead and deliver innovative and impactful design solutions.
  • Mastery of design tools such as Figma and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Deep familiarity with technical constraints and opportunities for designing across digital platforms, including desktop and mobile (Android and iOS), ensuring seamless integration and performance.
  • Familiarity with web standards (W3C and Section 508) and agile project management and delivery style using JIRA
  • Working proficiency with UX Research tools is a plus (e.g., UserTesting, etc.).
  • Strong communication skills for communicating across business units and with senior leaders to lead, support, and update design initiatives.
  • The ability to establish and support continuous improvement of customer experiences.
  • Ability to effectively manage input from cross-functional stakeholders 
  • Demonstrate vulnerability and humility as a leader.

Salary range is expected to be between

$90,225.00 USD - $162,405.00 USD
