About Generate:Biomedicines

Generate:Biomedicines is a new kind of therapeutics company – existing at the intersection of machine learning, biological engineering, and medicine – pioneering Generative Biology™ to create breakthrough medicines where novel therapeutics are computationally generated, instead of being discovered. The Company has built a machine learning-powered biomedicines platform with the potential to generate new drugs across a wide range of biologic modalities. This platform represents a potentially fundamental shift in what is possible in the field of biotherapeutic development.

We pursue this audacious vision because we believe in the unique and revolutionary power of generative biology to radically transform the lives of billions, with an outsized opportunity for patients in need. We are seeking collaborative, relentless problem solvers that share our passion for impact to join us!

Generate:Biomedicines was founded in 2018 by Flagship Pioneering and has received over $700 million in funding, providing the resources to rapidly scale the organization. The Company has offices in Somerville and Andover, Massachusetts with 300+ employees.

The Role:

We are seeking an experienced and visionary Executive Director to lead our newly established Therapeutic Assay Sciences group, a critical function within our AI-driven drug discovery engine. This leader will oversee a team of innovative scientists (ranging from SRA to Associate Director) dedicated to reimagining the development, optimization, miniaturization, and automation of biophysical, cell-based, and immunoassays—essentially transforming how we generate and utilize experimental data. At the intersection of assay innovation, automation, digital enablement, and data analysis, this team will generate high-quality experimental data to accelerate the design and optimization of our novel therapeutic proteins and continuously refine our generative AI models. The ideal candidate is not only an accomplished scientific and people leader but also a trailblazer—someone who envisions the future of AI-powered biopharmaceuticals and is ready to bring it to life.

Here's how you will contribute:

  • Lead the Therapeutic Assay Sciences group, defining its vision and strategy within Drug Design & Preclinical Development.
  • Oversee the development, optimization, automation, and qualification of assays, ensuring high-quality data generation, analysis, and database integration for optimal alignment with our drug development programs and AI/ML platform.
  • Drive cross-functional collaboration with teams in Technology (Prototyping, Data Science, Informatics, Automation groups), Therapeutic Biology, and Protein Sciences.
  • Identify, evaluate, and implement emerging assay technologies to maintain innovation and a competitive edge.
  • Foster a high-performance, collaborative, and innovation-driven culture.
  • Present findings and strategy updates to executive leadership and represent the company at scientific conferences and external collaborations.

The Ideal Candidate will have:

  • Ph.D. in Biology, Biochemistry/Biophysics, Molecular Biology, Pharmacology, or a related field.
  • 15+ years of industry experience (biotech/pharma) with a focus on assay development and 10+ years of leadership experience managing scientific teams and projects.
  • Proven expertise in developing, optimizing, automating, and validating medium to high-throughput assays (including biochemical/biophysical, cell-based, immunoassays, and molecular assays).
  • Expertise in data analysis and interpretation, including high-throughput data. Computational biology experience is an asset.
  • Passion for emerging assay technologies, including experience with non-plate-based technologies (e.g., droplet-based assays).
  • Strong digital/computational acumen, including familiarity with:
    • LIMS, SDMS, ELN and other state-of-the-art digital tools and platforms.
    • Cloud computing, data security, and digital infrastructure.
    • Automation technologies to enhance efficiency and throughput.
  • Prior experience in discovery and development of biologics is strongly preferred.
  • Exceptional leadership and mentorship skills, fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration.
  • A demonstrated ability to work in a complex matrixed environment and to lead by influence
  • Strong scientific communication skills and experience collaborating with external partners and CROs.
  • Experience drafting and reviewing regulatory filings.
