Executive Director, Technical Accounting US – Boston MA – Hybrid

Position Summary

The Executive Director, Technical Accounting is the enterprise leader responsible for interpreting, operationalizing, and governing complex accounting and tax matters across athenahealth. The Executive Director ensures the organization maintains the highest standards of financial integrity, compliance, and reporting excellence.

About the Team

Reporting to the Chief Accounting Officer, this leader partners across Finance, Legal, Product and Executive Leadership to support strategic decision‑making and scalable growth.  The Technical Accounting team is part of athenahealth’s broader Controllership organization.  This role oversees three critical functions: Technical Accounting, Revenue Accounting, and Tax and manages a team of approximately 30 people.

These teams partner closely with IT, FP&A, Corporate Development, Legal, Procurement and Product to evaluate new business models, commercial agreements, and strategic initiatives. We support the systems, processes and controls that ensure accurate financial results and audit‑ready documentation.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Serve as athenahealth’s internal expert on U.S. GAAP

  • Provide oversight and governance for athenahealth’s tax provision

  • Serve as a key point of contact for private equity stakeholders, providing clear updates on accounting matters, financial reporting and key operational insights.

  • Lead the evaluation, documentation and communication of accounting conclusions for complex, non‑routine and strategic transactions.

  • Develop, maintain and govern enterprise‑wide accounting policies and ensure consistent application across the organization.

  • Partner with senior leadership to assess accounting implications of new products, pricing models and commercial arrangements.

  • Lead interactions with external auditors and ensure audit‑ready support for all technical areas.

  • Build, mentor and lead a high‑performing technical accounting organization.

Additional Job Responsibilities

  • Support M&A due diligence, integration and post‑acquisition accounting.

  • Participate in cross‑functional initiatives to improve financial systems, processes and internal controls.

  • Provide training and education to Finance and business partners on emerging accounting standards and policy updates.

  • Contribute to transformation initiatives that enhance reporting quality, operational efficiency and scalability.

  • Represent the Controllership organization in cross‑departmental working groups and strategic projects.

Expected Education & Experience

  • CPA required.

  • 10+ years of progressive technical accounting experience, including public accounting experience.

  • Deep expertise in U.S. GAAP required. 

  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex accounting assessments and communicate conclusions to executive stakeholders.

  • Experience managing and developing high‑performing hybrid/remote teams across revenue, tax and/or technical accounting functions.

  • Strong cross‑functional collaboration skills and ability to influence without direct authority.


Expected Compensation

$182,000 - $310,000

The base salary range shown reflects the full range for this role from minimum to maximum. At athenahealth, base pay depends on multiple factors, including job-related experience, relevant knowledge and skills, how your qualifications compare to others in similar roles, and geographical market rates.  Base pay is only one part of our competitive Total Rewards package - depending on role eligibility, we offer both short and long-term incentives by way of an annual discretionary bonus plan, variable compensation plan, and equity plans.
