Company Overview

Deepgram is the leading platform underpinning the emerging trillion-dollar Voice AI economy, providing real-time APIs for speech-to-text (STT), text-to-speech (TTS), and building production-grade voice agents at scale. More than 200,000 developers and 1,300+ organizations build voice offerings that are ‘Powered by Deepgram’, including Twilio, Cloudflare, Sierra, Decagon, Vapi, Daily, Cresta, Granola, and Jack in the Box. Deepgram’s voice-native foundation models are accessed through cloud APIs or as self-hosted and on-premises software, with unmatched accuracy, low latency, and cost efficiency. Backed by a recent Series C led by leading global investors and strategic partners, Deepgram has processed over 50,000 years of audio and transcribed more than 1 trillion words. There is no organization in the world that understands voice better than Deepgram.

Company Operating Rhythm

At Deepgram, we expect an AI-first mindset—AI use and comfort aren’t optional, they’re core to how we operate, innovate, and measure performance.

Every team member who works at Deepgram is expected to actively use and experiment with advanced AI tools, and even build your own into your everyday work. We measure how effectively AI is applied to deliver results, and consistent, creative use of the latest AI capabilities is key to success here. Candidates should be comfortable adopting new models and modes quickly, integrating AI into their workflows, and continuously pushing the boundaries of what these technologies can do.

Additionally, we move at the pace of AI. Change is rapid, and you can expect your day-to-day work to evolve just as quickly. This may not be the right role if you’re not excited to experiment, adapt, think on your feet, and learn constantly, or if you’re seeking something highly prescriptive with a traditional 9-to-5.

Opportunity

Deepgram is looking for an Engineering Manager to help drive our product-led growth strategy. Deepgram is the leader in developer-friendly building blocks for language AI—real-time transcription, voice agents, and audio intelligence at scale. As such, this role directly impacts the customer's first impressions of Deepgram's products and uniquely influences their buying decisions. In this role, you will lead a team of frontend and backend engineers who work on our self-serve products like Console, and Product Playground. By partnering closely with Product, Sales, and Marketing, you will execute on the next-generation vision for our self-service platform.

In the current wave of AI-native development, developer experience is the product. The best infrastructure wins by being the easiest to trust.

What You'll Do
  • Lead a team of multi-disciplined software engineers to build our web applications, agentic tooling integrations (MCP servers, SDK experiences), and account management (authorization, billing, analytics) services

  • Work closely with the rest of the leadership and product management team on product strategy and roadmap refinement, with a focus on AI-native developer experience

  • Oversee technical design, task decomposition, and daily standups to ensure the team is executing on schedule

  • Lead the creation of features and product releases by being closely involved with the product development, design, and review—including AI agent playground environments and LLM-powered developer tooling

  • Drive the self-serve growth engine: activation funnels, in-product upgrade flows, and PLG experimentation and self serve deployments.

  • Work with other team leads from across the product organization on cross-functional projects, help identify the critical paths, and resolve dependencies

  • Hold regular 1-on-1s with direct reports, help them navigate challenges, and coach them for their career development

You'll Love This Role If You
  • Have experience working in early stage startups—from building and scaling to going through fundraising

  • Have great communication and leadership skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment

  • Have strong practical experience with software architecture and implementation, plus the ability to engage with an engineering team to help build and scale the existing infrastructure

  • Think about LLMs, agents, and model APIs as first-class product primitives—not just add-ons

  • Have familiarity with hybrid cloud models (bare-metal datacenters and cloud service providers) and scaled databases

  • Have interest in relevant technologies (Rust, LLM APIs, MCP/agent tooling, Elm, Postgres, GPUs, etc.) and a willingness to challenge common assumptions about the future trajectories of technology

It's Important To Us That You Have
  • A strong technical background building world class user-facing applications

  • Proven management and leadership experience

  • The ability to drive technical decisions in a scalable and thoughtful manner

  • Passion about good engineering practices, emerging technologies, and improving processes

  • A consistent record of mentoring and coaching team members

  • A passion for navigating the team through the real-world constraints of a startup: how to build quickly, iterate frequently, and run experiments

It Would Be Great if You Had
  • Experience building AI-powered developer tooling—playgrounds, SDK experiences, interactive docs, or evaluation UIs for ML models

  • Experience shipping agentic or voice AI integrations—MCP servers, function-calling pipelines, voice assistant SDKs

  • Experience driving PLG at a developer-tools company—activation experiments, usage-based pricing instrumentation, upgrade flows

  • Experience managing through a fundraising cycle

  • An opinionated approach to partnering with product and making timely deliveries

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
