About Generate:Biomedicines

Generate:Biomedicines is a new kind of therapeutics company – existing at the intersection of machine learning, biological engineering, and medicine – pioneering Generative Biology™ to create breakthrough medicines where novel therapeutics are computationally generated, instead of being discovered. The Company has built a machine learning-powered biomedicines platform with the potential to generate new drugs across a wide range of biologic modalities. This platform represents a potentially fundamental shift in what is possible in the field of biotherapeutic development.

We pursue this audacious vision because we believe in the unique and revolutionary power of generative biology to radically transform the lives of billions, with an outsized opportunity for patients in need. We are seeking collaborative, relentless problem solvers that share our passion for impact to join us!

Generate:Biomedicines was founded in 2018 by Flagship Pioneering and has received nearly $700 million in funding, providing the resources to rapidly scale the organization. The Company has offices in Somerville and Andover, Massachusetts with 300+ employees.

The Role:

We are seeking a highly collaborative and hands-on Director of SEC Reporting & Technical Accounting to build and lead our external reporting and SOX compliance infrastructure as a newly public biotechnology company. This role will establish scalable SEC reporting processes, design and document internal controls over financial reporting, and serve as the Company’s subject matter expert on complex accounting matters. The Director will work closely across the Finance organization and partner cross-functionally throughout the company, driving alignment, accountability, and best practices through strong collaboration, clear communication, and influential leadership. This is a high-impact opportunity for a technically strong, pragmatic leader who thrives in building structure in a dynamic, mission-driven environment.

This position will be located in Somerville, MA and be required to be onsite Monday-Thursday each week.

Here's how you will contribute:

  • Build and lead the Company’s SEC reporting process, including the preparation and timely filing of Forms 10-K, 10-Q, and other required disclosures. Establish reporting calendars and cross-functional workflows to ensure accurate, complete, and timely filings.
  • Own the preparation and review of financial statements, footnotes, and MD&A, ensuring compliance with U.S. GAAP and SEC regulations. Partner closely with Legal, FP&A, Investor Relations, and senior leadership on earnings releases and public disclosures.
  • Serve as the Company’s technical accounting subject matter expert, leading research, evaluation, and documentation of complex accounting matters, including collaboration and licensing arrangements, revenue recognition, R&D activities, equity transactions, stock-based compensation, and financing transactions.
  • Design and implement internal controls over financial reporting (ICFR) as the Company builds toward full SOX compliance. Oversee and manage the external consulting firm supporting SOX program development, while partnering with process owners across Finance and other functions to lead walkthroughs, risk assessments, and control documentation. Ensure readiness for control testing and drive remediation efforts as needed.
  • Act as a highly collaborative and cross-functional leader, partnering across Accounting, FP&A, Legal, R&D, HR, and executive leadership to establish scalable processes and ensure alignment. Drive accountability and results through influence, clear communication, and strong relationship-building.
  • Serve as a key liaison to external auditors, supporting quarterly reviews, annual audits, and technical accounting discussions.

The Ideal Candidate will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA required.
  • 10+ years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Big 4 public accounting experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong SEC reporting experience in a public company environment.
  • Experience building or significantly enhancing SOX compliance programs.
  • Deep knowledge of U.S. GAAP and SEC regulations.
  • Experience in biotechnology, life sciences, or R&D-intensive industries strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead through influence in cross-functional environments.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including technical documentation.

The ideal candidate is:

  • A collaborative partner who thrives in team-oriented environments
  • A leader who can influence and drive outcomes without direct reports
  • Comfortable operating in ambiguity and building structure from scratch
  • Highly technical yet pragmatic and business-focused
  • Detail-oriented with strong executive presence
  • Energized by working cross-functionally in a mission-driven biotech organization
