About the role

Location: New York City, NY or Boston, MA (flexible hybrid)

Reports to: SVP, Finance and Operations

Counsel Health is seeking a founding Director of People & Operations to build our human resources and internal operational infrastructure from 0 to 1. We are looking for a rare hybrid: a strategic leader who can design a long-term people strategy, and a relentless operator who isn't afraid to manage the "nitty-gritty" of physician licensing and 1099 onboarding.

You will be the primary architect of our corporate culture, compliance frameworks, and clinician-facing operations. This role is pivotal in ensuring that as we scale, our internal systems remain as robust and high-quality as the care we provide.

What you’ll do

  • Own and run core People Operations activities, including payroll processing, HRIS management, etc.

  • Serve as a first-line point of contact for employees, handling complex employee situations with professionalism, empathy, and discretion.

  • Build, document, and continuously improve People processes to ensure consistency, compliance, and a great employee experience as the company scales.

  • Partner closely with team leadership to design and execute people programs, including performance processes, manager enablement, and employee experience initiatives.

  • Ensure compliance with employment laws and internal policies, partnering with leadership as needed. Establish all HR policies, handbooks, and compliance protocols for a distributed, multi-state workforce.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Finance, Legal, and leaders across the company on people-related initiatives.

  • Partnering closely with Clinician Ops and Talent Leadership to ensure the seamless transition from candidate to employee is flawless, and that onboarding remains optimized.

  • Audit existing workflows to identify gaps before they become problems; you’ll be the one to say, "We need a system for this," and then go build it.

What you’ll bring

  • 8-10+ years in HR/People Operations, with a proven track record of building departments from scratch in a startup environment.

  • You embrace the “0 to 1” mindset and thrive in ambiguity and enjoy the challenge of turning a blank slate into a well-oiled machine. You have experience taking a company from 20 to 150+ employees/clinicians, ideally more than once.

  • The ability to communicate with extreme professionalism and empathy. You’ll be a leader with internal and external facing responsibilities, necessitating excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Extremely detail-oriented and meticulous, and an understanding of licensing and compliance with a strong focus on accuracy and follow-through.

  • Comfort using AI-powered tools and modern HR technology (ideally Rippling) to improve efficiency and workflows.

Bonus points for
  • Familiarity with the nuances of health-tech, clinician contracting (1099 vs. W2), and the regulatory landscape of digital health.

What we offer
  • Impact: Be at the forefront and contribute to groundbreaking, AI-driven healthcare experiences, directly interface with execs at the world's leading tech & healthcare orgs

  • Growth: Significant opportunities for broad ownership and professional development within our rapidly scaling startup

  • Compensation: Competitive salary + equity

  • Benefits: Comprehensive healthcare, vision + dental, 401K, Unlimited PTO, Parental Leave

Our Values
  • Patients come first.
We are clinicians 1st, technologists 2nd. We act with patient trust/safety at the center of every decision.

  • Innovate with optimism.
We are optimistic as we build the future of care delivery from first principles. Challenge the status quo when needed, no sacred cows.

  • Right answer wins.
Debate openly and pick the strongest path. We optimize for the company, not functions. We win and lose as a team.

  • Simplicity over complexity.
We choose clear, elegant solutions and avoid adding complexity that does not serve patients or the team.

  • Do fewer things, well.
We focus, and hold ourselves to the highest bar and pursue excellence in those areas.
