The Position

Have you ever wondered how insurance companies calculate the price of insurance policies?

The Actuarial Enterprise Data & Solutions Team is a dynamic, growing team at Arch. This team implements innovative insurance pricing models and analytical tools to improve profitability and growth across a wide range of Property & Casualty insurance products.

The Director, Implementation Engineer, will be responsible for helping understand our Pricing Actuarial Tool landscape and help with the conversion of those tools to cloud-native solutions. They will work closely with leaders across the company on high-profile analytics projects that drive business strategies. They provide technical guidance and ensure the use of sound practices and effective use of resources.  As a key member of the Actuarial Enterprise Data & Solutions implementation engineering team, they will advance our implementation capabilities and help our team deliver solutions faster.

Job Responsibilities

  • Evaluate our Excel/VBA-based Pricing Actuarial Tool Landscape, recommend improvements, and apply best practices

  • Review, decompose, and document existing Excel/VBA tools for cloud-native conversion

  • Reduce the Excel/VBA footprint of the actuarial organization

  • Make use new Excel functionality, such as Lambda functions, where appropriate

  • Mentor and train actuarial team members on appropriate Excel/VBA usage

  • Help map data from one actuarial analysis process to another

  • Build strong partnerships with peers across the organization to support actuarial pricing tool goals

  • Explore new technologies and data sources with curiosity and creativity

  • Provide the appropriate documentation of sources and technical solutions

Required Skills/Experience

  • 7+ years of experience with Excel/VBA-based tools

  • 7+ years of experience with insurance products and data

  • Experience with actuarial methodologies in pricing and reserving and their inter-relation

Desired Skills/Experience

  • Demonstrated experience building data structures to support analytics/research/actuarial functions in an insurance company setting

  • Ability to operate independently – managing tasks and engaging people across the team

  • Exceptional collaboration and relationship building skills

  • Comfortable handling ambiguous concepts and breaking down complex problems into manageable pieces

  • Flexibility to meet changing requirements and priorities

  • Resilient problem solving and critical thinking skills

  • Ability to communicate effectively with different target audiences

  • Familiarity with the MLOps framework

  • Experience with R/RStudio or Python

  • Experience with Microsoft Azure

  • Experience with Snowflake

Education

  • College degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics, Actuarial Science, Data Analytics, or equivalent

For individuals assigned or hired to work in the location(s) indicated below, the base salary range is provided. Range is as of the time of posting. Position is incentive eligible.

For NYC/JC: $129,500 - $201,066/year

For Hartford, Chicago: $116,600 - $180,959/year

For St. Paul: $100,400 - $155,826/year

  • Total individual compensation (base salary, short & long-term incentives) offered will take into account a number of factors including but not limited to geographic location, scope & responsibilities of the role, qualifications, talent availability & specialization as well as business needs. The above pay range may be modified in the future.
