The Director of FP&A, BSMO Reporting & Analytics is a key member of Vertex's Financial Planning & Analysis organization, providing financial direction and strategic insights to cross-functional leaders. Supporting the Biopharmaceutical Sciences and Manufacturing Operations (BSMO) organization, this role will lead strategic financial planning processes, drive reporting and financial modeling for BSMO, and help BSMO functional leaders to deliver against our company and functional goals.

A key focus of this role will be the development and improvement of consolidated BSMO financial reporting, including the identification of key value drivers, to provide strategic decision support for the BSMO organization. The role will help to lead and standardize the BSMO cost of goods sold (COGS) review process, including enhancing financial models to support scenario analysis.  As the BSMO Finance project manager, this role will partner closely with cross-functional stakeholders, including BSMO Functional and Project Leaders, Portfolio& Program Management, Functional Finance, Disease Strategy (DST) Finance, and Corporate Finance, to drive major strategic planning processes and projects.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Builds analytics and transparent consolidated BSMO financial reporting for both the Income Statement and Balance Sheet to drive forecast accuracy and decision support insights.
  • Drives the forward-looking cost of goods sold (COGS) modeling and review process for BSMO, partnering with functional finance peers, strategic sourcing and key members of the business to further standardize COGS modeling, tracking of COGS improvement targets and measuring performance vs. target.
  • Leads the monthly operating review, quarterly forecast, annual budget, long-range plan, and other major strategic planning processes for BSMO, acting as the BSMO Finance project manager.
  • Provides financial direction and strategic insight to BSMO functional leaders. Helps to define and deliver against short-term and long-term goals, including identification of key value drivers and Business KPIs.
  • Creates executive-level presentations to communicate BSMO portfolio performance, strategic insights, key business risks & opportunities, and financial recommendations.
  • Supports the BSMO monthly/quarterly accounting close for expenses and accruals, including flux analysis and compliance with SOX control requirements.
  • Lead and/or support the enhancement of FP&A tools, processes, and systems to guide BSMO financial planning and portfolio tracking.
  • Represents BSMO Finance as the primary liaison for global finance systems and process improvement initiatives.
  • Coordinates with other members of the CFO organization including R&D Finance, Corporate Finance, Disease Strategy (DST) Finance, Strategic Sourcing and Accounting to maintain a continuous improvement mindset and promote strong communication and efficient processes.
  • Manage a direct report, with opportunity to build and manage a high-performing Finance team that meets increasing needs and requirements across the business and helps drive the overall organization forward.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business, Economics or Accounting required. MBA and/or other advanced degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience in FP&A, portfolio management, or related roles within the biotech, pharma, or life sciences industry, with a focus on manufacturing and technical operations.
  • Expert analytical and financial modeling skills to evaluate a broad range of financial questions—especially portfolio analysis and strategic planning.
  • Proven ability to create and manage complex budgets, forecasts, and analyses in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels and a proven ability to present complex financial insights to senior stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated success in leading process improvement and change management initiatives.

Important Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strategic thinking and problem-solving.
  • Expertise with Excel and PowerPoint; working knowledge of Hyperion or similar enterprise planning tools.
  • Ability to lead and drive change in an evolving business environment, coordinating processes involving large numbers of people, complex systems, and tight deadlines to deliver innovative solutions.
  • Strong business acumen and judgment, and knowledge of the company's markets/products and industry trends.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and an eagerness to collaborate with colleagues (within or outside of finance) in sharing insights and learnings and partnering to ensure timely execution of project plans.
  • Capacity to understand pharmaceutical sciences, manufacturing and technical operations to address a broad range of challenges and business issues with the ability to make and facilitate quick decisions.
  • Possesses a continuous improvement mindset, with flexibility and ability to adapt to change.

Pay Range:

$182,400 - $273,600

Disclosure Statement:

The range provided is based on what we believe is a reasonable estimate for the base salary pay range for this job at the time of posting. This role is eligible for an annual bonus and annual equity awards. Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay, in accordance with federal and state requirements. Actual base salary pay will be based on a number of factors, including skills, competencies, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
