Who We Are

Flagship Pioneering is a biotechnology company that invents and builds platform companies that change the world. We bring together the greatest scientific minds with entrepreneurial company builders and assemble capital to allow them to take courageous leaps. Those big leaps in human health and sustainability exponentially accelerate scientific progress in areas ranging from cancer detection and treatment to nature-positive agriculture.

What sets Flagship apart is our ability to advance biotechnology by uniting life science innovation, company creation, and capital investment under one roof in a way that is largely without precedent. Our scientific founders, entrepreneurial leaders, and professional capital managers are each aligned around an institutionalized process that enables us to innovate and transform for the benefit of people and planet.

Many of the companies Flagship has founded have addressed humanity’s most urgent challenges: vaccinating billions of people against COVID-19, curing intractable diseases, improving human health, preempting illness, and feeding the world by improving the resiliency and sustainability of agriculture.

Flagship has been recognized twice on FORTUNE’s “Change the World” list, an annual ranking of companies that have made a positive social and environmental impact through activities that are part of their core business strategies and has been twice named to Fast Company’s annual list of the World’s Most Innovative Companies.

Position Summary:

The (Sr.) Director of Financial Reporting, Planning and Analysis (FP&A) is a core player in creating, growing, and building Flagship Pioneering early-stage companies. You will join the FP&A team in Flagship Labs Finance, primarily focusing on a set of NewCos or recent GrowthCos. You will be an instrumental player responsible for driving the annual planning cycle across the Flagship Lab companies, providing business insights to our leaders to measure progress on company performance and enhancing companywide financial reports, including enhanced analytics, finance modeling, cash flow management and consolidated reporting. This position provides an opportunity for professional growth and exposure to multiple Flagship-funded companies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establish and maintain the financial models that inform and enable capital allocation in a dynamic business planning environment
  • Work with Pioneering Business Units (PBU) leaders, their CFO/Heads of Finance, corporate teams, and the companies to develop and maintain the long-term value creation model
  • Partner with the PBU Controllers to support planning that is aligned with GL reporting structure and support functional and program costing
  • Responsible for all aspects of management reporting and analysis for operating and capital expenses, cash flow analysis and funding requirements for multiple business scenarios
  • Partner with HR to reliably track and report actual and projected headcount, including open reqs and progress against hiring plans and budgets
  • Provide analytical support and modeling for business development deals
  • Provide financial analysis to support critical portfolio and business decisions such as evaluation of indication selection, commercial opportunity analysis, make vs buy, etc.
  • Compile relevant financial information and presentations for internal (BOD, management) and external (lender, investors, partners) stakeholders, including meaningful data visualization as needed

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years’ experience in FP&A roles in the biotech/pharmaceutical industry, preferably a high growth environment. Candidates with experience in MedTech and AgTech will be considered
  • Experience with public companies preferred.  A combination with small private/start-up experience will be an advantage to thrive in a fast-growing and rapidly changing environment, comfortable with ambiguity
  • Expertise building relationships with various stakeholders and working with senior leaders
  • Direct experience with data manipulation and visualization tools is a plus (e.g., Power BI)
  • Master’s degree in accounting or finance. MBA or CPA is a plus

We are dedicated to building diverse and inclusive teams and look forward to learning more about your unique background.

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
