About This Role

The Director, Commercial Communications is responsible for leading the narrative for North America’s performance, growth and transformation. This individual will be a strategic leader who develops a deep understanding of our commercial business in North America to drive compelling messaging and education for external and internal stakeholders.

Working closely with senior leaders in Communications, Finance, Investor Relations, Operations and the North America leadership team, this role is responsible for the preparation and delivery of informative communications—including talking points, presentations, content and other materials—to prepare the President of North America to help build confidence that the organization is executing on its commitments. You will work with business leaders to synthesize the company’s performance, market dynamics and customer insights, ensuring all external messaging is rigorously supported by data. This role will proactively monitor and analyze the healthcare/biotech industry and our therapeutic markets, to provide insights and recommendations on messaging.

This role will also serve as a strategic partner to help identify and vet growth opportunities within the North American market. In this role, you will provide critical 'on-the-ground' assessments, analyzing commercial feasibility to support potential corporate development decisions. While the global function leads business development, you will serve as the regional point person when needed, ensuring that potential partnerships or acquisitions align with local operational market dynamics.

This is a high-profile role within the North America organization that requires creativity, storytelling, communication, and investor relations or similar experience. The ideal candidate will have a strong grasp of financial modeling and market dynamics. This role reports to our Head of External Growth, Innovation and Stakeholder Engagement.

What You’ll Do

  • Understand, synthesize and prepare the financial performance narrative for the President of North America. Write and create compelling, impactful and informative content to communicate the organization’s performance and growth prospects internally to employees and leadership, and externally to the investment and business community. Incorporate appropriate story telling narratives and lead the coordination and input from franchises to inform the overall narrative for Biogen North America.

  • Drive an organized, systematic and disciplined approach to executing on a financial communications strategy, including owning the processes and cadence for keeping materials up to date for weekly, monthly and quarterly communications, earnings and events. Partner with finance, therapeutic area heads, strategy & operations and the Office of the President to drive alignment.

  • Evolve the narrative as new emerging data, reports and insights emerge from within the organization and from customers, analysts or other key stakeholders. Think broadly and develop a deep understanding of our markets in real-time, including engagement with external healthcare stakeholders to understand key themes, trends and insights that strengthen the messaging.

  • Build strong relationships with leaders in finance, commercial, market access, strategy & operations and communications, and provide analysis to executives internally on the investment community's perception of the company and its competitors.

  • Identify opportunities to effectively leverage AI and other emerging technologies to streamline the processes and strengthen the accessibility of data-backed insights.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in financial, strategy or consulting roles leading strategic communications. Experience within a publicly traded company or advising public clients is essential.

  • Experience in biotech or healthcare industry

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to turn complex analytics, financial and market data into compelling stories

  • Proven experience managing the quarterly earnings process, including the drafting of earnings scripts and Q&A preparation.

  • Strong partnering and consultative skills with ability to develop trusted relationships across the enterprise

  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate business cases, providing critical feedback on commercial feasibility and financial alignment

  • Experience partnering directly with C-level leaders, with the confidence to challenge assumptions and provide strategic counsel

  • Interest in developing innovative communication approaches, including new emerging opportunities with AI technologies 

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Creative thinking and a high-level of curiosity, with ability to see the big picture, while owning the delivery of projects from start to finish

  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage multiple priorities

Additional Information

The base compensation range for this role is: $192,000.00-$264,000.00


Base salary offered is determined through an analytical approach utilizing a combination of factors including, but not limited to, relevant skills & experience, job location, and internal equity.

Regular employees are eligible to receive both short term and long-term incentives, including cash bonus and equity incentive opportunities, designed to reward recent achievements and recognize your future potential based on individual, business unit and company performance.
