WHO WE ARE

We’re not in the wing business. We’re in the flavor business. It’s been our mission to Serve the World Flavor since we first opened in 1994, and we’re just getting started. 1997 saw the opening of our first brand partner operated Wingstop location, and by 2002 we had served the world one billion wings. It’s flavor that defines us and has made Wingstop one of the fastest growing brands in the restaurant industry.

Above all else – our success is largely due to our people and our core values, or what we call The Wingstop Way of being entrepreneurial, service-minded, fun, and authentic. We believe having a strong people foundation centered on these collective values creates a crave-worthy culture and talented team, as well as ensures our brand is poised for accelerated growth. We all win together.

WHAT WE'LL NEED

We’re looking for a DevOps Engineer – Data Platforms who designs and operates data infrastructure as a scalable, automated platform — not a manually managed system.

This role sits at the intersection of DevOps, cloud infrastructure, and application engineering, with deep ownership of PostgreSQL data platforms running on AWS Aurora. You’ll define how data persistence is built, deployed, evolved, and operated across the organization, enabling teams to move fast without compromising reliability or data integrity.

You’ll be hands-on and highly influential — automating change, guiding schema evolution, optimizing performance, and setting platform standards that scale with the business. If you believe data platforms should be boring in production, automated by default, and engineered for change, this role is for you.

Data Platform Ownership

  • Own and operate PostgreSQL and Aurora PostgreSQL platforms across development, staging, and production
  • Ensure availability, durability, performance, security, and recoverability of data services

DevOps & Platform Engineering

  • Build and evolve database-as-a-platform capabilities that enable safe, repeatable change
  • Design and support CI/CD-driven database workflows, including schema migrations, validations, and rollbacks
  • Partner with DevOps and Platform Engineering teams to align data platforms with cloud and infrastructure standards

Schema Evolution & Change Enablement

  • Collaborate with application engineers on schema design, indexing strategies, and data modeling
  • Lead and support zero/low-downtime schema changes using backward-compatible patterns
  • Establish engineerining standards that make data models easy to evolve without disrupting production systems

Performance, Reliability & Observability

  • Proactively monitor and tune database performance through query optimization, indexing, vacuum tuning, and configuration
  • Build dashboards, alerts, and capacity plans to keep systems ahead of growth
  • Participate in incident response and post-incident remediation focused on long-term platform resilience

Application-Facing Engineering

  • Work directly with engineering teams to diagnose and resolve application-level data and performance issues
  • Provide guidance on efficient query patterns, transaction management, and data access strategies
  • Contribute SQL, functions, views, and supporting utilities when needed to enable safe production operations

Cloud & Security Practices

  • Design and manage backup, replication, failover, and disaster recovery strategies in AWS
  • Ensure best practices around access control, encryption, auditing, and compliance for data platforms

Flavor Stack

  • Data Platforms: PostgreSQL, AWS Aurora PostgreSQL
  • Cloud: AWS (RDS, IAM, monitoring, backups)
  • Languages: SQL (expert), working familiarity with application languages (e.g., C#, JavaScript)
  • Change Management: Flyway, Liquibase, or similar migration tooling
  • DevOps: GitHub Actions, CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code collaboration
  • Monitoring: CloudWatch, performance insights, custom dashboards
  • Ways of Working: Agile, product-aligned engineering teams

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

  • 5+ years of experience building and operating PostgreSQL-based data platforms in production
  • Strong hands-on experience with AWS Aurora PostgreSQL
  • Deep expertise in PostgreSQL internals, performance tuning, and indexing strategies
  • Proven experience executing live schema changes and migrations with minimal or zero downtime
  • Experience operating in DevOps and platform engineering environments, not siloed database teams
  • Strong understanding of automation, CI/CD, and infrastructure-as-code principles
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex data and performance issues under production pressure
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to influence architecture and platform decisions across teams

Extra Flavor

  • Experience supporting high-growth, high-traffic systems
  • Familiarity with data security, auditing, and compliance best practices
  • A platform mindset — enabling teams rather than becoming a bottleneck
  • Passion for mentoring engineers on data modeling, performance, and safe change patterns

WHO YOU ARE

No job is too small. You recognize that the real work happens in the restaurants, and everything we do should support their success. You stay humble, roll up your sleeves, and always look for ways to help. You learn from others and contribute wherever you can.

You care deeply about doing great work and driving results. You’re curious, ask questions, and seek out opportunities to improve. You don’t just point out problems—you bring solutions, ideas, and perspectives that move the team forward.

You take full responsibility for your work and see things through to completion. You aren’t afraid to fail because you know that failure is a part of learning and growth. You take action, move fast, and keep pushing forward.

You lead with empathy, respect, and emotional intelligence. You collaborate effectively, fostering a culture of trust and constructive feedback. You understand the importance of teamwork and ensure that your actions build others up rather than break them down.

You push yourself and others to be better. You embrace healthy conflict, knowing that great ideas and strong teams emerge from honest, constructive conversations. You believe that leaders create leaders and are committed to fostering a culture of growth, challenge, and continuous improvement.

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
