R&D Data Scientist I
At WHOOP, we're on a mission to unlock human performance. WHOOP empowers members (Olympians, Professional Athletes, Fitness Enthusiasts, etc.) to perform at a higher level through a deeper understanding of their bodies and daily lives. We’re looking for a R&D Data Scientist II who is excited to work with physiological data and can help us identify and evaluate cutting edge sensor technologies and find ways to leverage the data they produce to provide value to our members.
As an R&D Data Scientist I, you will report directly to our R&D Lead Research Scientist and will be responsible for exploring and analyzing time series sensor data produced by cutting edge hardware prototypes. You’ll leverage your analysis of such collected datasets to design algorithms to interpret and extract value from collected data, and provide feedback to inform sensor development and direction. You’ll formalize, document, and refine your learnings. Your efforts will ultimately aid in the deployment of cutting-edge technology to the marketplace, helping our members live healthier and happier lives.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Evaluate experimental sensor datasets and develop models and algorithms to translate sensor data into meaningful physiological measurements and insight
- Inform the development of hardware and experimental sensors based on the results of your analyses
- Build tooling and process as needed to facilitate analysis and algorithm development
- Work collaboratively in a R&D environment adapting to rapidly evolving requirements
- Manage and prioritize research efforts and maintain accountability to tight timelines
- Effectively communicate with immediate and external team members
- Work closely with other scientists on analysis and algorithm development
- Partner with various engineers to develop sensors to enable algorithm development
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Data Science, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field. Master’s preferred
- 3+ years experience applying advanced data science techniques
- Proficiency in statistics, optimization, machine learning, and data visualization
- Proficiency in scientific Python (NumPy, SciPy, scikit-learn, Pandas, XGBoost), SQL, and version control (Git)
- Experience with wearables and noninvasive physiological sensing preferred
- Ability to formulate hypotheses, draw conclusions, and deliver results
- Excellent verbal/written communication skills and able to work collaboratively and cross functionally
- Ability to present findings to stakeholders and communicate results to technical and non-technical audiences
- Understanding of exercise physiology or athletic experience is preferred
