Intro to Folia

Measure what matters.

Nell and Dan founded Folia Health because it has been simply too hard for their family members to receive personalized, data-driven healthcare that directly addresses the issues they're dealing with. People around the country and now the world, including our own team members and families, use Folia to track what they're experiencing - fatigue, symptom flares, pain - alongside what they're currently doing for treatment, and then use this information to understand the best way forward. Most Folia users also receive Data Dividends to share their data as part of our Research Programs, the business model that keeps Folia humming along.

Along the journey of building Folia, we've developed and validated a new type of health data - home-reported outcomes (or HROs). HROs allow people dealing with complex conditions to digitize their vast personal health knowledge, with simple responses to a personalized set of multiple-choice questions whenever they're experiencing a change in their health. HROs are actually now a valued part of the research methods that leading life sciences companies use to understand how their therapies are impacting people in the real world.

Folia (‘foglia’ is leaf in Italian) was named for the power of the individual contributions of people tracking their own health experiences. Each individual contributor is a leaf on the tree, performing important tasks to enable the whole (healthcare) tree to grow and become stronger - ultimately benefitting the leaf itself. (Yes we may have taken the metaphor too far...)

We are:

  • Female-founded and led by parents and family caregivers

  • Stubbornly focused on making healthcare make sense

  • 9 years in business

  • Backed by top venture funds with a strong financial runway

  • Made possible by our fast-growing user community with thousands of users in rare conditions

Folia Health is seeking a talented and mission-driven Data Scientist to join our growing team. This role is perfect for someone who has experience using data to answer complex health-related questions, loves finding creative ways to pull meaningful insights out of data using machine learning and other techniques, and is excited to work in a dynamic startup environment.

In this role, you will be responsible for planning and conducting a wide range of analyses of our multidimensional data set in order to meet customer needs, uncover patterns in our data, and help expand the insights we are able to provide to customers and users.

What you’ll do:

  • Structure and execute both recurring and stand-alone analyses of our complex data set, with a high level of efficiency and attention to detail.
  • Develop a deep understanding of our data; continually develop and implement new approaches to work towards a fuller understanding of our collected data in service of Folia’s mission.
  • Expand our suite of Data Science tools, including identifying new opportunities to leverage Machine Learning techniques.
  • Partner closely with the Engineering, Research, and Product teams to identify opportunities to further evolve both our user platform and research product.
  • Interpret and communicate findings to customers and other collaborators
  • Maintain the highest standards of accuracy and compliance with data privacy and security requirements
  • Contribute to a positive and supportive culture through collaboration, documentation, and knowledge sharing

You are:

  • Someone with 1-2 years experience working as a data scientist in the health tech or healthcare space
  • Motivated by making healthcare easier for people living with complex conditions
  • A person with high-level oral and written communication skills who is able to facilitate problem-solving conversations across technical as well as non-technical teams
  • Able to code accurately and efficiently in R. Familiarity with RShiny/SQL/Python is a plus.
  • Comfortable with git/version control and accustomed to collaborating on code with other Data Scientists in a professional environment
  • Someone who has a proven track record of addressing business questions through data analysis
  • Curious to acquire a strong knowledge of our unique home-reported data sources and actively contribute to the evolution of our data interpretation and insights
  • Comfortable identifying and mastering new techniques on your own, without top-down direction

Please note that this role is located in Boston, with a hybrid work schedule.

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
