What if… you could join an organization that creates, resources, and builds life sciences companies that invent breakthrough technologies in order to transform health care and sustainability?

Flagship Labs 101 (FL101) is an early-stage biotechnology company with an ambitious and exciting mission: to build a discovery engine that will map and control cellular interactions to discover novel targets and transform the lives of patients. FL101 is developing a revolutionary approach to this challenge and is recruiting a team of top-tier scientists to build a powerful, first-in-category platform. This is a unique opportunity to be one of the early employees of a biotech startup that combines an innovative mindset with the resources and know-how of Flagship Pioneering.

Position Summary:

As a Data Scientist on our computational team, you will transform complex experimental and public datasets into actionable insights that drive our platform development and therapeutic programs. You’ll partner with both our Platform team and others on the computational team to ensure data quality, build predictive models, and inform scientific campaigns across platform technology development and therapeutic programs. The ideal teammate will be highly adaptable, have strong organizational and communication skills, and will thrive in a highly collaborative and multidisciplinary environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine and novel data analysis of sequencing-based data resulting from FL101’s novel platform technology.
  • Create interactive dashboards and reports to communicate trends, anomalies, and key insights to scientific and engineering teams.
  • Collaborate with others on the computational and experimental teams to integrate your analytical outputs into active learning loops, helping to prioritize experiments and optimize resource allocation.
  • Work closely with R&D leadership, experimental scientists, and others to translate scientific questions into data requirements and modeling strategies.
  • Establish best practices for code versioning, data provenance, and analysis notebooks; contribute to internal knowledge bases and publications.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s or Ph.D. in Data Science, Statistics, Machine Learning, Computational Biology, or a related quantitative field.
  • 2+ years of experience in data analysis, statistical modeling, or machine learning—ideally applied to next generation sequencing data.
  • Proficiency in Python (pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn) and SQL for data manipulation and analysis.
  • Strong foundation in experimental design, statistical inference, and multivariate analysis.
  • Familiarity with data visualization libraries (Plotly, Dash, or similar) and dashboard frameworks

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with sequencing data
  • Experience with drug discovery
  • Experience working in a matrix organizational structure

At Flagship, we recognize there is no perfect candidate. If you have some of the experience listed above but not all, please apply anyway. Experience comes in many forms, skills are transferable, and passion goes a long way. We are dedicated to building diverse and inclusive teams and look forward to learning more about your unique background.

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
