The Role
As a core member of the Performance Measurement and Improvement team, the Healthcare Data Scientist will collaborate with teams across the company to provide ongoing analytic support for the development and execution of the health plan’s healthcare quality and affordability strategy. This person will utilize data to map patients’ clinical journeys, identify key drivers of variations in clinical quality, and measure consumer experience for the BCBSMA covered population, including Medicare, and is able to turn disparate data streams into actionable insights and cohesive business cases.
The successful candidate will have an established track record of identifying and executing data-driven solutions across a myriad of projects including, but not limited to, clinical quality, member satisfaction, and operational excellence.
Day-to-Day
- Collaborates as part of cross-functional teams to clarify key business questions and desired outcomes, translating those questions into structured analytic hypotheses, data requirements, and reporting specifications.
- Leverages diverse data sources (quantitative, qualitative, transactional, member-reported, third-party, and public) to develop advanced analytic products that support strategic initiatives in improving patient healthcare access, quality, and affordability.
- Generates and tests working hypotheses by aggregating and mining data, conducting complex analyses, and extracting actionable results to formulate targeted recommendations for effective member and provider outreach strategies that improve healthcare outcomes and consumer experience.
- Develops and maintains analytical dashboards to track the execution, performance, and overall impact of various clinical and operational programs, with a specific focus on Commercial health plan quality and Medicare Star ratings improvement.
- Prepares and delivers compelling presentations of analytical findings to internal decision-makers, utilizing informative business metrics to influence strategic decision-making.
What We're Looking For
- Experience mapping business needs to analytical planning and technical requirements.
- Proficiency working with large, complex, structured, and unstructured datasets.
- Demonstrated knowledge of, and practical experience in, applying statistical methods and analytical methodologies to support business decision-making.
- Proven ability to independently execute projects involving multiple stakeholders under tight deadlines.
- Strong business acumen with the ability to identify opportunities to enhance productivity, simplify processes, increase efficiency, and drive measurable tangible and intangible value.
- Hands-on data analytics experience is required, including advanced programming skills in SAS, R, Python, or equivalent analytical tools.
- Excellent communication skills, with a proven ability to clearly and concisely present analytical plans, complex findings, and strategic recommendations in verbal, written, and presentation formats to stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
What You Bring
- Bachelor’s degree in statistics, econometrics, applied mathematics, quantitative behavioral sciences, or a public health field is required. An advanced degree (MA, MS, or PhD) is highly preferred.
- Five (5) or more years of experience in an applied analytics or quantitative research role, with a proven track record of improving population health, access to care, and consumer experience.
- Experience supporting Commercial health plan quality and Medicare Star ratings improvement is strongly preferred.
- Collaborative problem-solving skills with a strong capacity to address complex data and analytical challenges through teamwork and open communication.

We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range, and the range may be modified in the future. An employee’s pay position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, performance, shift, travel requirements, sales or revenue-based metrics, and business or organizational needs and affordability.
This job is also eligible for variable pay.
