Job Description SummaryGE Vernova’s Power Conversion & Storage business combines advanced energy conversion and storage systems to meet the electrification needs of utilities and industries. With a focus on power stability, energy storage and industrial electrification solutions, Power Conversion & Storage empowers customers by addressing their most complex electrification challenges and accelerating their transition to a sustainable, decarbonized future.
The Control Solutions Architect will be at the forefront of designing, developing, and implementing advanced control solutions for our cutting-edge product portfolio. This pivotal role demands a deep understanding of power systems, battery technology, and grid integration, with a specific focus on grid-forming capabilities. The successful candidate will be responsible for translating market intelligence and product requirements into control solutions that will differentiate against competitors. This is an exceptional opportunity to contribute to the transition towards a more sustainable energy infrastructure by shaping the control strategies of utility-scale PV, BESS, and hybrid applications, ensuring their safety, reliability, and optimal performance in supporting the evolving power grid.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

The Control Solutions Architect will be responsible for the complete development, analysis and implementation of sophisticated controls requirements including meticulous testing of algorithms, extensive simulation of system behavior under various conditions, and generating the necessary code for deployment on hardware targeted for HPC.

  • Creation of detailed design specifications that clearly articulate the control system architecture and functionality, the formulation of rigorous test procedures to validate performance, and the establishment of clear implementation guidelines to ensure successful deployment and future maintainability.
  • Work closely with electrical, mechanical, and power systems engineers, fostering a synergistic environment to ensure the seamless integration of BESS with the electrical grid and other interconnected power generation assets, such as solar and wind farms.
  • Design and implementation of advanced control strategies that specifically enable grid-forming capabilities within HPC.
  • Ensuring that all control systems are designed and implemented in strict compliance with relevant grid codes, interconnection standards (such as IEEE 2800, UL 1741, and IEC 61850), and applicable regulatory requirements (including NERC CIP standards for cybersecurity) is a fundamental responsibility.
  • Development and implementation of sophisticated control strategies that enable BESS to effectively participate in various ancillary services markets.
  • Ensuring that all control system designs inherently incorporate safety features and strictly adhere to established safety standards, including NFPA 855, UL 9540, and IEC 62109 .
  • Adhere to cybersecurity best practices and relevant industry standards, such as ISA/IEC 62443 and NERC CIP, to protect our industrial control systems from potential cyber threats.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in control system design and implementation, with a significant focus on power systems or energy storage.

Desired Characteristics

  • Strong proficiency in Simulink and MATLAB for modeling, simulation, and algorithm development.
  • Demonstrated experience with industrial control platforms such as GE MarkVIe or Emerson HPCI.
  • Solid understanding of control theory, power electronics, and grid integration concepts relevant to BESS, PV, Wind and traditional generation assets.
  • Familiarity with communication protocols used in industrial control systems (e.g., Modbus, DNP3, IEC 61850).
  • Extensive experience with grid-forming inverter control strategies and their implementation in BESS.
  • In-depth knowledge of battery energy storage system technologies, including different battery chemistries (e.g., Lithium-ion, Lead-acid, Flow batteries ), battery management systems (BMS) , and power conversion systems (PCS) .
  • Familiarity with relevant grid codes and interconnection standards across different regions (e.g., ERCOT, AEMO , National Grid ESO ).
  • Experience with real-time simulation and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing for control system validation.
