Job Summary

FamilyWell is seeking an experienced Controller to own the company’s accounting operations and lead full-cycle accounting and tax functions as we scale nationally. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller will be responsible for the integrity of FamilyWell’s financial records, timely and accurate monthly close, tax compliance, and the internal controls that support a growing, venture-backed healthcare organization. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who thrives in a fast-paced start-up environment and wants to help build scalable financial infrastructure at a mission-driven company.

What You’ll Do

Accounting Operations & Financial Close

  • Own the full-cycle accounting function, including general ledger management, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll accounting, and revenue recognition.
  • Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process, ensuring accurate and timely financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
  • Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
  • Maintain and continuously improve the chart of accounts, accounting policies, and close checklist as the company scales.
  • Partner with the RCM and clinical operations teams to ensure accurate revenue and accounts receivable accounting across payers.

Tax & Compliance

  • Manage all aspects of federal, state, and local tax compliance, including income tax, sales/use tax, and payroll tax filings, working with external tax advisors as needed.
  • Oversee preparation and filing of annual tax returns and quarterly estimates in coordination with outside CPA firms.
  • Monitor multi-state tax and regulatory obligations relevant to a distributed, multi-state healthcare workforce.
  • Ensure compliance with 1099/W-2 filings and other statutory reporting requirements.
  • Stay current on relevant accounting and tax regulatory changes and assess their impact on FamilyWell.

Internal Controls, Audit & Risk

  • Design, implement, and maintain internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure accurate financial reporting.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for external audits, tax reviews, and any financial due diligence (e.g., for future fundraising).
  • Identify and mitigate financial and operational risk as the organization grows.

Financial Reporting & Planning Support

  • Deliver accurate, timely monthly financial statements and management reporting packages to leadership and the Board.
  • Partner with the Chief Financial Officer on budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management.
  • Provide financial analysis and ad hoc reporting to support strategic decision-making across the organization.

Team Leadership & Cross-Functional Partnership

  • Build, manage, and mentor accounting staff and/or outsourced accounting resources as the team scales.
  • Partner cross-functionally with RCM, People/HR, Technology, and Operations to ensure accounting processes align with broader company workflows.
  • Evaluate and help implement accounting systems and tools (e.g., Quickbooks, Claude, Candid, Sigma) to improve efficiency and reporting capability.
Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including full-cycle accounting and tax, with at least 2–3 years in a Controller or senior accounting leadership role.
  • Strong working knowledge of GAAP, multi-state tax compliance, and internal controls.
  • Demonstrated experience managing the monthly close process and producing accurate, timely financial statements.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills, with the ability to translate complex financial information for non-finance stakeholders.
  • Comfortable operating with significant autonomy in a remote, fast-paced start-up environment.

Strongly Preferred

  • Experience in healthcare, behavioral health, or a venture-backed start-up environment.
  • Prior experience preparing for or supporting an audit, due diligence process, or institutional fundraising round.
  • Experience building or scaling an accounting function and/or team.
  • CPA, or qualifications to complete CPA are preferred, but not required
