Job DescriptionOverview
The Chief of Staff (CoS) to the Chief Operations Officer is a strategic partner and trusted advisor responsible for driving alignment across the operations portfolio, managing critical initiatives, and ensuring the organization’s highest priorities are executed effectively. This role blends strategic thinking with operational excellence, requiring the ability to “zoom out” for big-picture strategy and “zoom in” to manage details. The CoS acts as a force multiplier for the COO and the broader operations leadership team, enabling focus on high-impact decisions while ensuring organizational clarity and execution across the functions within the operations portfolio, including IT, Data, Analytics & AI, Supply Chain, Procurement, Global Business Solutions, and Real Estate.
The role combines four core areas of responsibility: a traditional Chief of Staff remit, leadership of the Enterprise PMO, leadership of a small team of Enterprise Business Process Owners, and M&A integration leadership. Success in the role requires strong enterprise judgment, disciplined execution, and the ability to drive cross-functional alignment and accountability across complex initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Chief of Staff
- Serve as a strategic partner and trusted advisor on the organization’s highest-priority initiatives and decisions.
- Lead and manage special projects across areas such as strategy, operations, transformation, and organizational effectiveness.
- Drive cross-functional initiatives from ideation through execution, ensuring clear communication, execution discipline, and measurable outcomes.
- Prepare briefing materials, pre-reads, presentations, and decision support for business reviews, steering committees, and executive discussions.
- Help translate leadership priorities into action through planning, follow-up, governance, and accountability.
Enterprise PMO Leadership
- Lead the Enterprise PMO, a small team responsible for advancing cross-functional, enterprise initiatives.
- Establish governance, prioritization, reporting, and escalation processes to support effective enterprise program execution.
- Ensure enterprise initiatives are well scoped, appropriately resourced, and supported by clear milestones, dependencies, and decision points.
- Partner with functional leaders to identify risks, manage tradeoffs, and remove barriers to execution.
- Develop and maintain enterprise dashboards and updates that connect initiative status to business outcomes.
- Provide regular progress reviews and recommendations to senior leadership.
Enterprise Business Process Ownership Leadership
- Lead a small team of Enterprise Business Process Owners responsible for critical end-to-end business processes that span functions.
- Establish clear accountability for process design, governance, performance measurement, and continuous improvement.
- Partner with business and functional leaders to identify process pain points, risks, inefficiencies, and standardization opportunities.
M&A Integration Leadership
- Lead integration planning and execution for mergers, acquisitions, and other strategic transactions, in close partnership with business and functional leaders.
- Develop and manage integration governance, workplans, decision forums, reporting, and issue resolution to support value capture and operational continuity.
Qualifications
- Experience: 10–15 years in leadership roles interacting with senior teams and leading enterprise initiatives during periods of transformation. Typical prior roles include Director- or senior Director-level leadership roles in strategy, consulting, operations, transformation, program management, or process excellence.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree required; MBA or equivalent preferred.
- Travel: Ability to travel domestically and internationally as business needs require.
- Skills:
- Exceptional organizational, project management, and program governance skills.
- Strong business acumen and ability to analyze data, assess tradeoffs, and support executive decision-making.
- Gravitas and interpersonal skills to engage senior leaders internally and externally.
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated experience managing complex enterprise programs and leading through influence across multiple functions.
- Experience driving business process ownership, continuous improvement, or operating model change.
- Attributes:
- Bias for results and execution.
- Highly adaptable, with the ability to “zoom in and zoom out.”
- Comfortable with high visibility, complexity, and confidentiality.
- Enterprise-minded and service-oriented, with the initiative to identify issues and drive solutions.
