Job Summary:

The CMP Manager will lead the adoption of the Category Management Process (CMP) at BJ’s. CMP is an end-to-end assortment planning process for each category that delivers profitable sales growth via member-backed assortments, as well as exceptional product cost and member value through well-choreographed vendor partnerships.

The ultimate goal of the CMP is to offer the best possible product assortment to BJ’s member families and in so doing, deliver on our ambitious growth goals. The CMP is a key pillar of BJ’s merchandising transformation and a core priority for the BJ’s executive leadership team.

Reporting to the VP of Merchandising Transformation, this role is part of a newly created team tasked with partnering with BJ’s merchants to influence and lead the company’s strategic decisions on category assortment, acting as coach, thought-partner, sounding-board and process guardian during the journey of adoption of the CMP methodology, This role will have high visibility in the organization, a cross-functional reach and act as role model on all matters related to the CMP.

The Sr CMP Manager is responsible for partnering with multiple merchants during the annual CMP reviews to guide the development of high-quality assortment plans and help achieve successful negotiation outcomes with vendors.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Guide the cross-functional teams through the CMP methodology: serving as an advisor on milestones, deliverables, timelines and best practices
  • Maintain and update CMP playbooks and methodologies based on ongoing experience and emerging requirements
  • Serve as a trainer in CMP training sessions
  • Ensure participation of all cross-functional stakeholders (Merchandising Analytics, Planning & Allocation, Space Planning, Own Brands, Digital, etc.) as needed
  • Participate in CMP team working sessions and milestone meetings for the supported merchants
  • Hold merchant teams accountable for meeting the level of rigor expected of the CMP Act as intellectual sparring partner to the supported merchant teams to influence the best decisions for BJ’s.
  • Provide feedback on milestone meeting materials developed by the merchant teams
  • Act as gate keeper on progression of CMP work past each milestone with the VP of Merchandising Transformation and the responsible DMM/GMM
  • Report on progress against the key milestones along the CMP for the supported merchants, escalating roadblocks to the VP of Merchandising Transformation and to the VP DMM
  • Develop a strong, collaborative and trusting relationship with the merchant teams supported
  • Act as CMP champion and change agent: facilitate change management and adoption of the CMP by influencing beyond authority
  • Partnering with the VP of Merchandising Transformation to govern the overall CMP

Success for this role will be twofold:

  • Successful adoption of the CMP methodology by the BJ’s merchant organization: CMP becomes fully internalized in BJ’s ways of working
  • Development of high-quality merchandising recommendations, translating into winning member and sales outcomes

This role is ideally suited for an internal candidate with a strong understanding of BJ’s merchandising processes and culture as well as familiarity with the CMP processes piloted at BJ’s over the past years. The ideal candidate is collaborative, proactive, change-oriented, well-organized, able to influence others beyond the line of authority and able to communicate effectively and persuasively.

This role offers the opportunity of exposure to several merchandising categories at once, visibility on our cross-functional processes and the ability to have a lasting impact on the trajectory of our merchandising  organization.

Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree (in Business, Math preferred)
  • Min 7 years in Merchandising, project management, management consulting
  • Deep understanding of CMP methodology
  • Direct CMP experience in multiple category transitions as a merchant
  • Knowledge of BJ’s merchandising processes and culture
  • Collaborative working style: openness to different points of view, empathy and good listening skills to enable fruitful collaboration with CMP stakeholders
  • Developed business judgement to problem-solve effectively with a senior audience
  • Strong project-management: ability to maintain a work plan, adhere to milestones, flag roadblocks early
  • Flexibility and openness to reprioritizing work based on evolving needs
  • Structured thinking
  • Proactiveness
  • Interested in being an advisor/partner vs a decision maker
  • Ability to influence beyond authority
  • Motivated by training and developing others
  • Ability to quickly become an expert in the merchandise categories supported
  • High motivation, with eagerness to run the extra mile to deliver world-class results
  • Insight-orientation: ability to distill data analysis down to they key messages that matter
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office package
  • Preferred: strong communication skills in Power-Point: ability to illustrate complex analysis and concepts in an easily accessible way that senior leadership can readily understand and act upon
