About the Role

We are seeking a Business Development Manager - Sub-Advised Insurance to drive commercial growth across Wellington's strategic insurance relationships. This individual will be responsible for developing executive-level client relationships, identifying new business opportunities, increasing share of wallet, and positioning the firm for long-term growth within the insurance marketplace. The role serves as the commercial lead for assigned relationships and is responsible for originating and advancing opportunities, expanding existing mandates, and developing strategic account plans. Working closely with Relationship Managers and internal partners, the Business Development Manager will leverage deep insurance industry expertise and market knowledge to deliver sustainable business growth.

Success will be defined by the ability to expand strategic partnerships, increase assets under management, and establish Wellington as a trusted long-term partner within the insurance ecosystem.

RESPONSIBILITIESThe Business Development Manager will:
  • Own growth objectives for a defined portfolio of insurance and sub-advisory relationships.
  • Develop and execute strategic account plans focused on retention and expansion.
  • Identify opportunities for new mandates, product expansion, and partnership growth.
  • Build executive-level relationships with senior client decision-makers.
  • Lead commercial discussions, opportunity development, and negotiations.
  • Partner with Relationship Managers to deliver a seamless client experience.
  • Monitor industry trends, competitive developments, and market opportunities.
  • Coordinate client engagement activities across Product, Investments, and leadership teams.
  • Contribute to long-term business planning and channel strategy development.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS
  • Insurance Industry and Sub-Advisory Expertise: Deep understanding of the retail insurance landscape, including separate accounts, VITs, variable annuity structures, and sub-advisory relationships. Demonstrated ability to navigate complex insurance organizations, understand carrier business models, and identify opportunities that align Wellington's capabilities with client objectives.
  • Strategic Business Development: Proven ability to identify, originate, and advance commercial opportunities within sophisticated institutional relationships. Skilled at developing long-term account strategies, uncovering unmet client needs, and converting relationship capital into sustainable business growth through new mandates, product expansion, and partnership opportunities.
  • Executive Relationship Management: Exceptional ability to build credibility and influence with senior executives and decision-makers across client organizations. Able to establish trusted advisor relationships through industry expertise, strong commercial judgment, and a consultative approach to client engagement.
  • Commercial Acumen and Negotiation: Strong understanding of business economics, competitive dynamics, and partnership structures within the asset management and insurance industries. Ability to lead complex commercial discussions and negotiate outcomes that balance client needs with Wellington's long-term strategic and financial objectives.
  • Enterprise Leadership and Collaboration: Ability to effectively coordinate and influence cross-functional teams across Investments, Product Management, Legal, Compliance, Operations, and Distribution. Skilled at aligning resources, navigating organizational complexity, and driving execution against strategic priorities without direct authority.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
  • 10+ years of experience in sub-advisory or institutional business development and/or relationship management.
  • Demonstrated success growing strategic client relationships.
  • Experience covering insurance carriers and/or sub-advisory relationships.
  • Strong commercial instincts and ability to convert growth opportunities.
  • Excellent communication and senior stakeholder management skills.
  • Series 7 and Series 63 licenses.
  • CFA, CAIA, or other relevant designation preferred.

At Wellington Management, our approach to compensation is designed to help us attract, inspire and retain the best talent in our industry. We strive to pay employees fairly and competitively across all levels and roles. Our approach to compensation considers all aspects of total compensation; all employees are eligible to receive salary, variable compensation, and benefits. The base salary range for this position is:

USD 120,000 - 225,000

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered when making compensation decisions, including but not limited to skill sets; role; skills and experience; certifications; and education. This range is an estimate, and further details on salary and total compensation aspects will be shared with candidates during the recruitment process.   

 

Base salary is only one component of Wellington’s total compensation approach. Other rewards may include a discretionary Corporate Bonus and/ or Incentives, if eligible.
