Founded in 2016 with offices in Los Angeles (HQ) and New York, M13 is a technology venture capital firm that invests in the brightest founders, building the future of consumer behavior in work, commerce, health, and money.

Messier 13 (or M13) is one of the brightest star clusters in the Northern sky. It’s full of remarkable individual stars, and when those stars come together, they create something more significant than the sum of its parts. We at M13 contribute to our collective success by being brighter together.

The Business Analytics Engineer will join M13’s Propulsion Team within the Technology Group, whose mission is to build the preeminent AI-driven platform for investing and portfolio management.

Reporting to the Technology Director, this highly cross-functional role is both strategic and hands-on. The Business Analytics Engineer will architect and implement technical solutions, maintain internal systems, and enhance the data backbone that powers the firm’s operating platforms. Just as importantly, they will collaborate closely with teams across the firm to understand workflows and dependencies, identify opportunities for optimization, and contribute to cross-functional planning and research efforts.

We’re looking for a generalist with strong technical ability, sound business judgment, and a knack for identifying high-leverage improvements to internal processes. This role is not a pure coding position; success will require a balance of technical fluency and business acumen.

What You’ll Bring to the Role

Technical Expertise

  • Experience designing and maintaining SQL and NoSQL databases

  • Ability to implement business logic at both the application and database levels

  • Proven experience building and maintaining custom ETL and reverse ETL pipelines

  • Proficiency in at least one programming language (Python preferred) to support data engineering, transformation, and analytics workflows

  • Familiarity with foundational model APIs to support intelligent internal tooling

  • Experience researching, evaluating, and contributing to open-source projects, especially in the AI/ML space

  • Comfort working with and extending the functionality of tools in M13’s tech stack, including Salesforce, Notion, and Asana

Business and Analytical Capabilities

  • Strong analytical mindset and experience translating business requirements into technical implementations across SaaS platforms

  • Hands-on experience with building and maintaining data pipelines, data models, and governance processes

  • Experience in analytics engineering, data normalization and transformation, and supporting data visualization initiatives

  • Ability to enable self-service access to data and insights by designing user-friendly interfaces, clear data models, and easy-to-use tools

  • Track record of working cross-functionally to deliver scalable solutions to non-technical stakeholders

  • Interest in staying current with technical trends to bring best practices into M13 and its portfolio

Cultural and Strategic Fit

  • Passion for startups, venture capital, and innovation ecosystems

  • Thoughtful communicator who thrives in fast-paced, collaborative environments

  • Naturally curious, proactive, and energized by solving complex problems

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Participating in the development and maintenance of M13’s internal reporting dashboards and tools that provide business stakeholders with timely, self-service access to key information

  • Evaluating and implementing internal tools to improve productivity, workflow clarity, and visibility

  • Supporting the design and delivery of internal tooling powered by foundational models, data enrichment, and AI agents—especially tools that extract, parse, and reason over unstructured data

  • Configuring internal systems to align with cross-functional team workflows

  • Collaborating with stakeholders to understand their processes and data requirements, delivering robust solutions while ensuring a consistent architecture based on unified taxonomies and single sources of truth

  • Promoting a self-service culture through thoughtful architecture, data design, and documentation

  • Advising on compliance and security best practices as they relate to internal data and system usage

What’s in it for you:
  • One Team, One Dream: A chance to work alongside world-class VC talent in a collaborative and developmentally-focused culture that is respectful, inclusive, diverse, and inspiring. You’ll do your life's best work here and have fun doing it.

  • Investment in Your Future: Employees are also eligible for an Employee Profit Sharing Program and 401(k) Retirement Plan with matching for all employees.

  • Comprehensive Health Package: Medical, dental, and vision plans that are thoughtful and supportive of the needs of each M13 employee

  • Open PTO Policy: We're focused on healthy work-life balance and, therefore, set no firm guidelines regarding how much time off each employee is permitted to take

Research shows that while men apply to jobs when they meet an average of 60% of the criteria, women and other marginalized folks tend only to apply to jobs when they check every box. If you have what it takes but don't necessarily meet every single point on the job description, please still get in touch. We'd love to chat and learn more about what you want to do next in your career.

M13 provides equal employment opportunities (EEO) to all employees and applicants for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, genetics, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. We deeply understand the value of bringing together a team with different perspectives, educational backgrounds, and life experiences. We encourage people from underrepresented backgrounds to apply.

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
