As an Build Team Intern, you will assist in prototyping, building, and testing systems that will go into future generations of our 3D printers.

Internship Term: Winter/Sping 2026 (approx. January 12 - April 24)
Commitment: Full-time
Location: Onsite in Somerville, MA
Application Requirements: A portfolio of your previous engineering work/projects is required

The Job

  • Assist in building and modifying prototypes of next generations 3D printers and accessory equipment
  • Fabricate and/or machine simple mechanical parts
  • Inspect parts via CMM, calipers, micrometers, multimeters
  • Set up and perform engineering tests
  • Create and present various reports, ensuring organized documentation is provided to engineers throughout any testing process
  • Run test procedures on our SLA printers, ensuring to properly log the different HW configurations and document secondary observations i.e. surface quality of print

You

  • Hands-on DIYer eager to work on state of the art printers
  • Hands on maker with a portfolio of projects to share
  • Experience using a 3D printer
  • Able to manage a high level of detail given a large amount of data
  • Partners well team members to work on projects
  • Ability to interpret technical issues from non-technical explanation

Bonus skills:

  • Familiar with CAD
  • Prior building experience

Compensation: 

Interns at Formlabs are paid on a bi-weekly pay schedule. The pay range for this role is between $2,000 and $2,400 per bi-weekly pay period, and your pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, location and expected impact on the organization. This is a salaried role, so you will always be paid based on the assumed 40 hours per week as a full-time intern. This position does not offer housing or relocation assistance.
